SAS introduces SAS Analytics U to address data and analytics skills gap

SAS is launching SAS Analytics U, a higher education initiative that aims to help address the data and analytics talent gap in Singapore. The initiative includes free SAS software, university and industry partnerships, and engaging user communities that support the next generation of SAS users.

“With Singapore moving towards becoming a global data and analytics hub, skills in analytics are in high demand, but there isn’t enough talent to fill those jobs. We are launching SAS Analytics U in Singapore to help address that gap, by making it easier for anyone to become an analytics expert,” said Francis Fong, Managing Director, SAS Singapore.

The new SAS University Edition offers free use of SAS foundational technologies, ideal for data and statistical analysis in teaching, research and self-paced learning.

The already established SAS OnDemand for Academics will be easier to access as users no longer need to be associated with a specific course or professor. Beginning in late July, anyone can use the no-cost, online, hosted service for teaching and academic research, which includes many additional SAS applications such as SAS Enterprise Guide and SAS Enterprise Miner.

Both offerings will be available to learners looking to upskill in analytics, and will include access to SAS Studio, SAS’ newest web-based tool for writing and running SAS code.
SAS is used at more than 3,000 institutions worldwide for teaching, research and administration.

Existing partnerships are now under the SAS Analytics U umbrella. Over the years, SAS has forged strategic partnerships with members of Singapore's institutes of higher learning (IHL) aimed at increasing the skills, resources and competencies in business intelligence (BI) and business analytics (BA) in Singapore.

These collaborations allow SAS to enable the IHLs by providing the knowledge and technology aligned with what the industries need, through training, scholarships, SAS' BI and BA solutions and internship opportunities, and include Singapore Management University, National University of Singapore, Nanyang Technological University, SIM University, Nanyang Polytechnic, Temasek Polytechnic, Republic Polytechnic and Singapore Polytechnic.

“With analytics transforming the workplace, graduates with analytics skills have a significant competitive advantage in the market,” said Steven Miller, Dean, School of Information Systems, Singapore Management University. "Our partnership with SAS delivers tremendous value in bringing real-world expertise into the classroom, equipping our students with the knowledge and skills to solve real challenges.”

Since 2008, SAS has offered 79 bond-free scholarships to students studying at local IHLs, aimed to encourage students to acquire knowledge in the field of data analytics without the obligation to find a job placement within SAS.

Beyond partnerships with IHLs, SAS also collaborates with the Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore (IDA) to meet the demand for business intelligence and analytics (BIA) professionals. The IDA-SAS BIA Program is a nine-month programme designed to fast-track new infocomm professionals to take on specialist-level roles in this BIA area.

SAS has also established the National Infocomm Scholarship programme, which aims to groom “industry-ready” scholars who can make immediate contributions to Singapore’s infocomm industry. SAS cooperates with IDA to recruit, train, and groom three suitable candidates under this programme.

“Data and analytics underpin our development toward becoming an increasingly smart nation, and hold incredible potential to improve the lives of citizens,” said Khoong Hock Yun, Assistant Chief Executive, Development Group, IDA. “Besides encouraging businesses in Singapore to adopt data analytics, IDA is also working with the industry to strengthen our base of infocomm talent.”

Last but not least, SAS has launched professor and student communities rich with resources and data sets to teach and learn SAS. The SAS User Group (Singapore) is a community that allows SAS users to meet other business analytics users to share knowledge and experience, and learn more about SAS solutions from colleagues, peers, and professionals.
