Electronics components receive boost from smartphone, smart TV demand

TechNavio, a tech-focused research firm, forecasts a bright future for radio frequency (RF)-related components due to increased demand for wireless communication.

According to TechNavio, the Global Smartphone RF Power Amplifier* Market, will see a CAGR of 22.35% from 2013 to 2018. Some of the key vendors in the market include Avago Technologies, RF Micro Devices, Skyworks Solutions and TriQuint Semiconductor, it said.
“A rise in the number of internet users has had a positive impact on the growth of the global smartphone RF power amplifier market. The new offering from TechNavio highlights the evolution of next-generation LTE wireless networks as a major factor providing strong growth opportunities for these amplifiers to support mobile computing applications in smartphones,” says Faisal Ghaus, Vice President of TechNavio.

Image sensors** will also see growth due to increased functionality of smartphones, and the continued adoption of smartphones around the world, TechNavio added. The Global Smartphone Image Sensor Market 2014-2018 forecasts a CAGR of 12.5% from 2013 to 2018.

Smartphones with high screen resolutions and built-in cameras, coupled with efficient and low-cost image sensors, will drive the market in the coming years, the company said, naming Aptina Imaging, OmniVision Technologies, Samsung Electronics and Sony as key vendors.

“The past few years have witnessed a change in the utility of cameras in smartphones. Currently, large screen smartphones are used to make video conference calls in the corporate world. Non-business customers are also using this application very frequently. These types of application require smartphones to have effective and high-quality image sensors, which is expected to bolster the market for smartphone image sensors,” says Ghaus.

Smart TVs*** also employ RF devices to help perform functions such as Internet browsing, online gaming, web applications, streaming media and social networking. TechNavio forecasts a CAGR of 12.26% from 2013 to 2018 for RF devices for the global smart TV market. Increasing interest in advanced consumer electronics, the declining price of smart TVs and growing penetration of high-speed Internet are some factors that have enhanced the adoption of smart TVs worldwide, according to Global RF Devices for Smart TV Market 2014-2018.

"Rapid developments in technology in various electronics such as smart TVs has led to the availability of multiple features on a single platform. These devices are increasingly used as multifunctional terminals that offer a wide range of new applications on a single platform,” says Ghaus.

Many of the same vendors which play in the RF amplifier market for smartphones are also on the ascendant with smart TVs: Avago, RF Micro Devices, Skyworks and TriQuint Semiconductor; Murata Manufacturing is also mentioned as a player to watch.

*TechNavio defines an RF power amplifier as a semiconductor device that converts electrical signals into radio signals. Such amplifiers, used in wireless communication devices like cell phones, tablets and radios are compatible with 3G and 4G technologies. They are extremely compact, which enables them to fit easily into smartphones and other wireless communication devices like tablets, notebooks, e-readers and GPS devices.

**TechNavio defines an image sensor as a device that converts an optical image into an electronic signal. It is used primarily in camera modules, digital cameras, smartphones and other imaging devices.

***The TechNavio definition of a smart TV, also known as connected TV or hybrid TV, is a TV with integrated Internet capabilities or a TV set-top box that offers advanced connectivity and computing abilities. Smart TVs  allow users to install and run advanced applications based on specific platforms.
