So how much do the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus cost to make?

TechInsights' Teardown.com has put both new iPhones under the microscope to see how their costs compare.

According to Teardown.com, preliminary estimates of the iPhone 6 Plus are that it costs US$242.50 to build, an increase of about 15% more than the iPhone 5S.

A major component of the estimated combined cost comes from Apple's new A8 processor with Qualcomm's MDM9625M modem (confirmed 20nm and likely dual sourced fabrication using TSMC's 20 nm process or Samsung's 20nm process), which account for US$59.50 of the preliminary CoG. The confirmed Toshiba 19 nm process NAND flash accounts for US$9, and the 2x nm DRAM from Samsung, another US$5, while the 5.5" display and touchscreen assembly costs another estimated US$51.

Enabling Apple's first foray in the world of contactless payment using Apple's new Pay programme is the NFC IC, NXPs' new NFC controller the PN548, with a secure element die, and a Touch ID button for access control.

For the iPhone 6 the preliminary display or touchscreen cost is estimated at US$41.50 with the iPhone 6 total CoG to be approximately US$227. The increase in build cost was expected considering the larger display, expanded cellular coverage, the addition of NFC, and a larger battery. Of note is that the board design and the use of 'tried and true' chipsets allow Apple to maintain a high margin on the devices, Teardown.com said.
