Workday makes HR at Maxis more agile

Maxis, a major communications service provider in Malaysia, has adopted Workday technology to improve its human resource management.

At the end of 2013, Maxis embarked on a transformation journey that included replacing a 10-year-old, heavily customised HR system. The company had four guiding principles in its search for an upgrade:

The new system had to be intuitive and mobile; there would need to be an improved data structure and analytic capabilities to facilitate decision making; and processes had to be simple, relevant and flexible to change. Last but not least, the new system had to support more self-service features for managers and employees than the old system.

Maxis decided on implementing the Workday Core HCM, Expense, Recruiting and Talent Management modules. Chin Mee Lin, Head of HR Services, Maxis, explained: “We believe Workday is able to meet what we are looking for, which is an intuitive HR system that is able to streamline processes while still remaining flexible to change.

"We didn’t need much convincing as the look and feel of the application is simple yet intuitive – the design supports the way our employees work."

Chin noted that the first phase of the HCM modules took just six months, "which shows that Workday is agile and can keep up with the speed of our business.”

In phase 1, Maxis implemented the Core HCM and Expense Modules from Workday including: Expenses, Benefits, Payroll Interface, MSS (Manager Self-Service), Absence, Compensation, and ESS (Employee Self-Service), delivering accessible, intuitive and improved HR system. Maxis will be implementing Workday’s Recruiting and Talent Management modules later in the year.

“We have seen several benefits from Workday, starting with providing our employees with a mobile experience that they are looking for. Being able to apply and approve leave while on-the-go, view organisation structure from mobile devices, and take a photo of an expense receipt and save it for further processing - these are just some of the benefits that Workday is able to deliver," Chin said.

Maxis expects to go into uncharted territory next. "In addition to accessibility and the intuitive user experience, Workday is also built to support big data which we hope to learn and leverage much more in the future to do more analytics and empower our managers to make more informed decisions,” said Chin.
