Singtel crafts work-study programmes for Singapore Institute of Technology students

Singtel is partnering with the Singapore Institute of Technology (SIT) to support work-study programmes aimed at nurturing infocomm technology (ICT) and cyber security talents. The programmes are designed to prepare SIT students for the future workforce by equipping them with employable, real-world skills and experiences, while meeting their aspirations to pursue a university degree.

As the newest addition to its comprehensive talent development programmes created in collaboration with institutions of higher learning, Singtel’s Work-Study Programme will support SIT students in the areas of information security and software engineering. This is expected to lead to career pathways such as cyber security research and development (R&D), product development and management, cyber analysis and forensics, operations and cyber architecture.

Bill Chang, Country Chief Officer and Chief Executive Officer, Group Enterprise at Singtel said, “As one of the world's leading cyber security services companies, Singtel is pleased to participate in the Work-Study programme for Information Security and Software Engineering. We are among the first ICT companies in Singapore to support this timely undertaking which will address two critical skills needs locally. First, the local industry is in short supply of trained software engineers. Second, stemming from the upward worldwide trend of cyber threats, the economy is in great need for trained cyber security professionals."

Under the work-study programmes, participating students become trainees of the supporting company. They can experience industry induction, mentorship, attachments and capstone projects to deepen industry-relevant skills. The students would acquire skills and experience relevant to the needs of the company while the company gains a productive contributor and an avenue to recruit, assess, groom and retain talent.

Chang added, “This initiative is a win-win proposition for all. It aligns with our holistic approach to developing and investing in critical skills for our talent pool that strengthens our ability to adapt to rapidly changing needs of our sector. Also, it provides the trainees with world-class hands-on experience to hone their skills and opens the door for them to pursue their career dreams, and in the process, enhances Singapore’s Infocomm and cyber security capabilities.”

The collaboration demonstrates Singtel’s commitment to creating more developmental pathways for its talent base. Its Singtel Cadet Scholarship Programme offers diploma scholarships in Engineering, Cyber Security and Customer Experience. To support internships in real work environments, Singtel offers the SHINE Programme. To prepare entry-level professionals to support Singtel’s Smart Cities initiative Singtel has the NCS Solutions for Urbanised Future (SURF) training programme. More recently, Singtel worked with the InfoComm Development Authority of Singapore (ISA) on the Cyber Security Associates and Technologists Programme, which equips fresh ICT professionals with basic cyber security skills.
