Malaysia Developers' Day - ASEAN Edition has prizes worth US$15,000

AT&T and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) are hosting the second Malaysia Developers' Day - ASEAN Edition on 17 and 18 September 2014. The contest will challenge participants from 12 countries in Asia* to create a mobile app within 24 hours. Teams that come up with the best apps will win prizes totalling US$15,000.

MCMC and AT&T will provide the resources, education and networking structure to create apps more quickly and at lower cost. Participants will have access to AT&T’s application programming interfaces (APIs), already built-out services that tap into the power of AT&T’s network. Developers can quickly plug them into their apps for added functionality, such as speech-to-text. Mentors will also be on hand to help and share their knowhow with the participating innovators.

“AT&T was the first carrier in the US to create a developer programme – the longest running programme to date. AT&T is proud to continue to once again collaborate with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission and co-sponsor the 2014 Malaysia Developers’ Day,” said Carlton Hill, VP, Device Operations and Developer Services, AT&T. “The event is a great way to empower developers by giving them the right tools and opportunities to build a richer, more connected digital ecosystem across the region.”

Last year’s Malaysia Developers' Day - ASEAN Edition saw more than 110 participants and 24 new app ideas. This year, the organisers are inviting creative minds from 14 countries in Asia to develop apps and compete for prizes in three categories, all under the theme of "Building a Digital Ecosystem":
Best app for Community Involvement
Best app for Smart City
Best app for Commercialization

“Last year, we showcased the energy and talent of Malaysia developers who stimulate the economy and can make a difference through the creation of various mobile apps,” said MCMC Chief Planning and Development Officer Dato’ Mohd Ali Hanafiah. “By expanding this event to other countries across the region, we hope to see even more innovation and creativity to drive our region forward.”

The 2014 Malaysia Developers’ Day – ASEAN Edition will take place in the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre from 9 am local time on September 17, 2014 to 5 pm on September 18, 2014. The winning teams in the three categories will each receive US$1,000. They will then present their apps at the KL Converge! Gala Dinner on September 19, 2014 for a chance to win a grand prize of an additional US$10,000. Twelve scholarships will be provided by AT&T and Udacity for nanodegrees available in the massive open online course (MOOC) format.
