Over 4 million pre-orders for iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus in 24h

Apple announced on 15 September that a record number of first-day pre-orders of its latest iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, announced 9 September. Over four million were received in the first 24 hours. In Singapore, interest even crashed telco M1's website.

Demand for the new iPhones exceeds the initial pre-order supply and while a significant amount will be delivered to customers beginning on 19 September, many iPhone pre-orders are scheduled to be delivered in October, the company said. Additional iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus units will be available to walk-in customers on September 19 at 8am local time at Apple retail stores. Customers are encouraged to arrive early or order online from the Apple Online Store to pickup in-store or receive an estimated delivery date. 

“IPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus are better in every way, and we are thrilled customers love them as much as we do,” said Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO. “Pre-orders for iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus set a new record for Apple, and we can’t wait to get our best iPhones yet into the hands of customers starting this Friday.”

iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus will be available in the US and selected countries, including Australia, Hong Kong, Japan, and Singapore beginning September 19 and in more than 20 additional countries beginning September 26 including New Zealand, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Taiwan, Turkey and the UAE.

The iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus feature 4.7" and 5.5" Retina HD displays, and run on iOS 8 on the Apple-designed A8 chip with second generation 64-bit desktop-class architecture. Both models have iSight and FaceTime HD cameras, ultrafast wireless technologies; and Apple Pay*. 

The iPhone 6 comes in gold, silver or space gray, and has a suggested retail price in the US of US$199 for the 16GB model, US$299 for the 64GB model and US$399 for a new 128GB model with a two-year contract.** The iPhone 6 Plus comes in gold, silver or space gray, and will be available in the US for a suggested retail price of US$299 for the 16GB model, US$399 for the 64GB model and US$499 for the new 128GB model with a two-year contract.** 


Prices vary by telco. In Singapore, SingTel is offering the 16GB iPhone 6 together with a two-year US$42.90 contract (200 minutes outgoing calls, 1,000 text messages, 2GB local data, 2GB SingTel Wi-Fi) for S$508, and S$648 for the 64GB model. The 128GB model costs S$788. The iPhone 6 Plus costs S$648, S$788 and S$928 for the 16GB, 64GB and 128GB models respectively for the same contract.

* Apple Pay will be available to iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus customers in the US as a free update to iOS 8 this October.
