Andi Mann, VP of Strategic Solutions, Office of the CTO, CA Technologies delivers a keynote at the Asia Pacific & Japan Media & Analysts Summit 2014 in Singapore. |
"It's your global, multi-device, multi-application, mobile life," he said, noting that apps are a key competitive differentiator for businesses today, a concept that the company calls the Application Economy.
It's not just about smartphones and tablets, either. Mann pointed out that there are now Internet-enabled fridges, video watched on game consoles, and video communications on TVs.
"It's a new world where
everyone and everything is always connected. There are no on/off switches, no connections to Wi-Fi. Just imagine the complexity of this world, where every employee, every customer,
every partner, is always connected, everywhere, permanently connected to the business but completely untethered," he said.
A new generation of application programming interfaces (APIs), the building blocks that create software, will be required to create all the apps that are required to succeed in the application economy with data coming from many more sources than today, Mann said. "We understand that to survive and thrive in the application economy your business will need to be rewritten by software," he said. "Every business will be run by software, and at CA we are creating the software that helps fuel that transformation."
CA Technologies is helping to unlock the potential of the application economy through a three-pronged strategy. The 'Management Cloud' helps to run IT like a business. DevOps accelerates innovation, while Security allows improved engagement with customers and business users by giving them the apps they need safely and securely.
In a nutshell, management cloud tools tell businesses what they are doing well and where to focus, allow smarter ways to work and simplify management. Some of the related announcements from CA World 2014 include:
- The integration of CA Executive Playbook with CA PPM and CA CSM so exec can see in native mobile format a clear vision of what's in their portfolio, and make the right executive decisions.
- Integration for CA CSM with CA Release Automation and Puppet Enterprise, so decision makers can understand where new apps are in the release cycle at any time.
- Zero day support for iOS8 in CA EMM with a smart containerisation strategy.
Devops promotes business agility and shortens the app development cycle. "Traditionally it has been a serial process," said Mann of software development. "If it was not good, you put
it back into development and start again. You can't test anything till you've got
everything. But now it's impossible to get everything all the time. We enable
developers to get access to virtual resources so they can crunch their timeline and
develop in parallel. It's faster software at lower cost."
The reality, Mann said, is that businesses cannot afford to release software once every six to 12 months. Releases need to come out more often, and that can only be achieved with a method such as DevOps. New announcements to boost DevOps at CA World 2014 include:
- Integration for CA Service Virtualization with CA Automated Testing and API Management
- More integration for CA Release Automation
- A brand new CA Mobile App Analytics
CA Technologies tools under the Security umbrella protect critical
data so can businesses can build a bond of trust with stakeholders. There is unified access across web, mobile, or hybrid platforms, so that access is available to the right people when they need it, and end-to-end security mobile to mainframe, that balances business enablement with data protection. New solutions from CA World 2014 include:
- The CA Mobile API Gateway, simplifying access for mobile users across all apps
- A brand-new API developer portal
- An SaaS version of the developer portal that allows APIs to be published in minutes
And while enterprises across Singapore recognise the impact of the application economy, less than half of the respondents (45%) felt that they are very or extremely effective in responding to it. A lack of resources (36%) and a lack of understanding of the benefits of the application economy (32%) by the executive management were cited as the biggest obstacles to responding effectively to the application economy.
To better cope and meet the new demands of the application economy, enterprises in Singapore are:
- Delivering an average of three customer applications in the past year. Over a third (36%) developed four or more customer applications
- Increasing investments by an average of 14% over the next five years
- Acquiring software companies to add development capabilities, with over a third (34%) having already done so, or which plan to in the next year
Seven out of ten of line of business (LOB) respondents are releasing applications more quickly due to competitive pressures. Other pressures cited by LOBs driving the launch of applications included customer demand (42%) and revenue shortfall (32%). Only 10% of LOB executives are completely satisfied with IT's speed in delivering new applications or services. As a result, 80% of enterprises surveyed have adopted or are planning to adopt DevOps to increase application delivery. Among these enterprises, the focus will be on investing in more training for development and operations personnel, redesigning processes to drive DevOps practice and hiring new resources with necessary skills.
“In Singapore which has one of the world’s highest mobile and broadband penetration rates, applications have become part of the daily life of consumers and the business standard for organisations trying to engage and connect with their customers,” said Chua I-Pin, VP, Asia South, CA Technologies.
“Organisations that will thrive in this application economy are those willing to transform their corporate culture, innovate and invest in new application capabilities so as to provide their customers with a superior experience.”
