Eighty percent of rare documents digitised in Oman

The Ministry of Heritage and Culture in Oman is in the midst of digitising important rare documents and manuscripts in its possession to preserve them and create backups that can be stored in multiple locations, the Oman News Agency (ONA) has reported

The project began in 2010 and the ministry aims to upload the e-copies on the Internet in the long term after ensuring that the security of the manuscripts and intellectual property rights remain with it, the ONA stated.

Said bin Nassir al-Na'ebi, Director of the Technical Department at the Directorate General of Documents and Manuscripts, the Ministry of Heritage and Culture was quoted as saying: "So far, we have been filming and digitising 3,950 manuscripts out of 4,836 manuscripts at the Manuscripts Centre of the Ministry of Heritage and Culture. We have also filmed and digitised 320 manuscripts belonging to some civil and private libraries and some individuals."
