CloudOn, which helps users edit documents over the cloud, has announced it has joined cloud service provider Dropbox. In a blog post the co-founders noted that they have 9 million users, handled some 90 million documents, and become a top 10 productivity app in 120 countries.

"We could not have done it without you," the post said. "Today, we’re taking the next step toward our vision of reimagining docs – by joining the Dropbox team. Our companies share similar values, are committed to helping people work better, and together we can make an even greater impact."

As part of the move, the company announced that the CloudOn service will be shut down on March 15, 2015, and no more new users are being accepted as of today.

In an email to users CloudOn also offered 1 GB of extra storage for free Dropbox accounts and three months free for Dropbox Pro with the news.
