Panasonic today announced at CommunicAsia2015 a made-to-order, scalable optical disc library system to support the escalating demand for longer-term data storage in data centres. CommunicAsia2015 attendees are the first to see the LB-DH8 Series at the Panasonic booth (#BB3-12, Level 3). The event is on till 5 June.
IDC currently estimates that the digital universe is doubling in size every two years and will multiply eightfold between 2013 and 2020 – roughly from 46 exabytes to 377 exabytes. The amount of data generated means data centres need a more efficient and cost-effective method of data archival to cope with rising storage costs, increasing power consumption and the risk of data loss.
“Today, organisations are facing a huge data challenge driven by rapid adoption of mobile and social media. Current data archival practices are no longer sufficient to meet the escalating demands while keeping costs manageable,” said Harry Yonenaga, Director of Storage Device and System Solution Group, Panasonic System Solutions Asia Pacific.
“At Panasonic, we have leveraged the best in optical disc drive, media and advanced robotics technologies to develop the LB-DH8 Series to provide the high reliability and flexibility needed for long-term data storage. The LB-DH8 Series is Panasonic’s solution that embodies simplicity, scalability and the flexibility to meet growing needs of today’s data centres.”
Scheduled to be available across key markets in Asia Pacific in October 2015, the Panasonic LB-DH8 Series has low power consumption and lowers total cost of ownership for organisations grappling with the accelerating growth of data. Optical disks are the backbone of the Panasonic LB-DH8 Series as they enable businesses to significantly lower power consumption and save on associated costs. No air-conditioning is required, for example. In addition, the discs have a data storage life of 50 years, reducing the need for regular data migration.
“With Asia Pacific contributing more than a quarter of the total energy used by data centres around the world, energy management methods are a priority for Asia Pacific1. The LB-DH8 helps counter this issue as this method of data storage does not generate heat, and can be stored at room temperatures,” Yonenaga added.

To reach data transfer speeds of up to 216 MBps when RAID 0 is applied, RAID technology is incorporated to distribute and record data onto the optical disks. The archiver also supports RAID 5 and RAID 6 – this gives the customer more control and choice by letting them select their required level of fault tolerance. It increases the reliability of the solution.
Businesses can customise the solution to fit their current needs with a minimum investment of one bottom module and one base module. The solution can then be scaled up as more data is generated. Up to seven modules can be installed to realise the maximum optical disc storage capacity of 638.4TB per rack.
