Asia Pacific well represented in Imagine Cup 2015 winners' list

Australia’s Team Virtual Dementia Experience has won 1st prize in the World Citizenship category of the Imagine Cup, winning a US$50,000 prize and a trip to Microsoft YouthSpark Boot Camp. The Virtual Dementia Experience (VDE) simulates the effects of ageing and dementia in a virtual environment, so that cognitively intact people can gain an appreciation of the issues confronting people with dementia.

Singapore’s Team Mozter was in 2nd place for the same category, taking home US$10,000. Mozter is a mosquito monitoring platform that leverages on the Internet of Things and cloud-based technologies to assist mosquito control officers with national mosquito surveillance and control programmes. The platform comprises of a mosquito detection sensor, a data processing server and a data visualisation platform to tell the story of the data collected from the sensor.

China’s Team T.H.I.E.F also did well with their Lost Shadow project, taking 3rd place (worth US$5,000) in the Games category. Lost Shadow is a 3D touch control puzzle game where the quest is to regain your shadow. Objects have to be moved around to clear a path for the player to level up.

In the Innovation category, Team NoObs from Azerbaijan, took second place with a US$10,000 prize for Spinal, which helps users control posture. 

As a bonus for Singapore, Microsoft Student Partner Jason Chee won the Microsoft Student Partner of the Year global award. The award honours the student partner who exhibits advanced technical skills, the quality of the apps they’ve created and the events they’ve organised to reach students in their country.

Thomas Middleditch, star of HBO's Silicon Valley; Alex Kipman, inventor of HoloLens; and Jens Bergensten, Lead Developer of Minecraft were the judges for the World Championship round.

There were a significant number of finalists from Asia Pacific, including teams from:

Nepal (Team Octavian for an anti-poaching 3D game called DYD, which can be played with or without the Kinect, for the Games category)

Indonesia (Team Alix for Solidare, a Windows-based phone app for donating to orphans and poor children who are most vulnerable to dropping out of school, World Citizenship category)

India (Team Eyeluminati for Manovue, an intelligent personal assistance device for the blind, in the Innovation category)

Japan (Team ScreenAir for Screen Feels Air, a screen which measures the air against its front and simulates air that blows into it using DirectX, for the Innovation category)

Malaysia (Team SwinDesign with horror mobile game Tou - The Sacrifice, Games category)

New Zealand (Team Tether for an app also called Tether, which discovers and leverages the talent in the user's social network, in the Innovation category)

Pakistan (Tether, a cloud based automated scheduler for discovering optimal meeting times and routes, Innovation category)

South Korea (Team JY6 with a sliding puzzle game called Lynn - A Girl Into Puzzles, Games category), and

Taiwan (Team Boby for Boby, which uses basal temperature to help in pregnancy planning, for the World Citizenship category).

The UAE was also a finalist for the World Citizenship category with VioLens, a platform that allows victims and bystanders to confidentially report instances of abuse, the Palestinian Authority became a finalist in the Innovation category for a brain controlled robot.

Imagine Cup is a global student technology programme and competition that provides opportunities for students across all disciplines to team up to create applications, games and integrated solutions that can change the way we live, work and play. A total of 150 teams from 64 countries participated in the World Semifinals of Imagine Cup 2015.
