SanDisk gets into the portable SSD business

Source: SanDisk
SanDisk, a flash storage solutions provider, has entered the portable SSD market with the SanDisk Extreme 900 Portable SSDs, which it says is the world’s fastest line of USB Type C-based portable SSDs, and the SanDisk Extreme 500 Portable SSDs, a new family of pocket-sized, rugged drives. The company also launched the SSD Plus, a 2.5” entry-level internal drive that is up to 23X faster than an existing hard drive~.

With the launch of the new Windows 10-compatible solutions, SanDisk's SSD portfolio addresses those who are looking for better responsiveness, as well as consistent performance for multimedia and business applications. The portfolio also includes products that optimise the performance of servers and applications for hyper scale data centres and client SSDs. Recently, the company opened the industry’s first end-to-end SSD facility in Penang, Malaysia. According to SanDisk, consolidating operations in one place lets it respond to customer demand dynamically and ensure quality and performance of products.

“SSDs are taking over computing. Boot time and data access times are reduced while battery life is extended. But it’s not just notebooks. Gamers and performance PC users at home are turning to SSDs for better performance and so are photographers, videographers and creative professionals looking to move massive files at phenomenal speeds,” said Mark Eng, Country Manager, SanDisk Singapore. “With our strong heritage and broad portfolio in SSDs, we at SanDisk are best positioned to provide SSD solutions for different market segments, all with a brand they trust.”

The SanDisk Extreme 900 drives feature speeds of up to nine times faster than a portable hard drive1, while the SanDisk Extreme 500 drives offer speeds up to four times faster1.

“As a recognised leader in developing solutions for professional photographers and videographers, we designed this game-changing family of offerings to provide our customers with even greater speeds and capacities to keep up with rapidly increasing demands for high-quality content,” said Eng.

“Whether a professional or amateur, this level of portability, speed and capacity is exceptional, and we believe it will transform the way people create and produce high quality video content—ultimately saving them time and money.”

The SanDisk Extreme 900 Portable SSDs are all about performance and capacity. Available in up to 1.92TB*, the new drives have a compact, durable aluminium case and feature transfer speeds of up to 850MBps**. These new drives come with both USB Type C and Type A cables to provide the ultimate flexibility.

The SanDisk Extreme 500 Portable SSD delivers more than four times the speed of a portable hard drive1. The drive allows users to transfer files at up to 415MBps**. Available at up to 480GB* in capacity, this light-weight yet durable drive features rubber bumpers and a metal ring to allow clipping onto a bag.

The new portable SSDs are built to sustain temperature extremes and a reasonable level of impact2. The new family of SanDisk Extreme Portable SSDs also feature SanDisk SecureAccess software with 128-bit encryption to secure files3.

The SanDisk SSD Plus targets laptop and desktop PC users who want to improve system performance. It has sequential read speeds of up to 520MBps** for faster boot up, faster application response, faster data transfer and better game play. It is shock resistant** and available in 120GB and 240GB** capacities.
SanDisk's expertise in flash goes back to its first flash-based SSD in 1991. SanDisk’s retail SSD portfolio includes the SanDisk SSD PLUS; SanDisk Ultra II SSD; SanDisk Ultra II mSATA SSD, and SanDisk Extreme Pro SSD in the internal SSD range, along with the recently launched Portable/external range compromising of SanDisk Extreme 900 Portable SSD and SanDisk Extreme 500 Portable SSD.
