SAP is harnessing its technology to provide improved healthcare services, both through software that can be used by different stakeholders, as well as by addressing real-world problems.
Medical Research Insights is a native HANA app brings together structured and unstructured information from previously siloed data to produce insights such as life expectancy for a particular disease, or tease out specific cohorts of individuals for research purposes, says Andy David, Helathcare Director, SAP APJ during the SAP APJ Media Summit 2015 in Singapore last month.
On a smaller scale, SAP is changing behaviour by working with healthcare specialist Roche on a pilot that measures blood sugar levels. The levels are recorded and then analysed by an app, which in turn produces recommendations for the user. This allows people to monitor their own health more easily, David said.

The goal is personalised medicine. "Patient engagement is the blockbuster drug of the century," he said. "Changing behaviour can result in improved clinical outcomes."

"(You get) alerts to stop you and change your behaviour; the doctor can see in real time what you've been doing," he said.
Roche also benefits from the technology as it can now build customer loyalty whereas in the past it would not have been able to identify the customers who bought its monitoring devices, David added.
In Singapore, SAP is working with ACE Seniors to benefit caregivers of dementia patients. Dr Tan Bee Wan, Executive Chairman, of ACE Seniors and also Executive Chairman of Integrative Learning Corporation, said one out of six people who turn 75 will get dementia in Singapore.
She described how adult children have to become medical experts when their parents succumb to dementia, not only becoming carers but also personal assistants when they organise medical visits, coordinate with healthcare professionals and keeping other family members updated about the parent.

"We wanted to support caregivers in looking after dementia patients," she explained, sharing that Singapore is ranked third in terms of speed of ageing globally, and that there are 7.7 million new cases of dementia annually worldwide.
SAP and ACE Seniors have collaborated on an app that offers messaging, integrates care requirements with the extended medical team, and sends alerts when it is time to take medicine. The eCareApp pilot will run from December 2015 to March 2016, involving five to ten families each from four associations, the Alzheimer's Disease Association (ADA) of Singapore, Community Foundation of Singapore (CFS), Asian Women's Welfare Association (AWWA), and Metta Alumni Care.
"If this app is very successful we can
finetune it we hope that we can bring this out in Singapore, then out
in Asia," she said.
