Market for mobile mapping to surpass US$26 billion by 2020

Mobile mapping solutions and services are being increasingly used by individual and enterprise users to access real-time, location-based information, driven by factors such as the widespread penetration of robust mobile devices, government regulations on emergency response, and improved Internet connectivity.

According to a report on mobile mapping by MarketsandMarkets, the market will grow from US$10.28 billion in 2015 to US$26.6 billion by 2020 at a CAGR of 20.9% from 2015 to 2020, with the Asia Pacific region expected to feature the highest CAGR due to the large-scale penetration of mobile devices equipped with GPS, and improved network connectivity.

Location-based services (LBS) will dominate the market, while indoor mapping is expected to transform the mobile mapping landscape during the forecast period. The transportation and logistics industry vertical is forecast to take up the most market share with verticals such as media and entertainment, manufacturing, and retail to grow significantly over the same period.

The major vendors mentioned in the report include Google, Microsoft, TomTom, Trimble, Apple, Foursquare, and Telecommunication Systems.

Technavio’s market research analysts estimate in a recent report that the indoor LBS market in Southeast Asia will generate revenues worth US$260 million between 2016 and 2020. The introduction of proximity-based mobile marketing and advertising solutions are the primary growth, offering win-wins as the technology can provide relevant offers and information to customers and also help companies to track data regarding people at different venues and locations.

“One of the interesting trends that this market is witnessing is the introduction of LBS with LED fixtures are rapidly gaining popularity as they are highly cost effective. The chips manufactured by lighting companies are embedded into LED-based overhead lights, which are used in offices and big-box stores. These chips communicate with the consumers’ smartphones and use sensors to track their movement inside a store. This service helps the shoppers to locate a product easily,” says Rakesh Panda, Lead Analyst, ICT, Technavio Research.

Technavio says the retail segment will account for more than 60% of the total market share during the forecast period of 2016 to 2020. Much of this growth can be attributed to the introduction of navigation and product details by retailers, which helps customers to make better purchase decisions.

The leading vendors in the indoor LBS market in Southeast Asia include HERE, Sprooki, Ruckus Wireless, Yoose, and Google.
