IDC has released the first of a new video series to kick off 2016. In the five-minute video IDC Executive Vice President, Worldwide Research Products and Chief Research Officer, Crawford Del Prete shares where growth opportunities lie within 3rd platform innovation accelerators.

According to IDC innovation accelerators are emerging technologies that depend on the 3rd platform, and "radically expand its capabilities and applications". Examples of such accelerators include robotics, the Internet of Things (IoT),
natural interfaces, cognitive systems (also termed cognitive computing), 3D printing, and next-generation security.

Natural interfaces and cognitive systems are relatively new terms. Cognitive systems aim to simulate how the brain works and draws on various technologies like pattern recognition to achieve results, while natural interfaces are a step up from keyboards and mice by being able to respond to more 'natural' activities such as motions and gestures.

IDC predicts where innovation accelerators will be by 2020
  • The installed base of IoT devices will exceed that of smartphones and tablets combined
  • At least half of developers will include some cognitive functionality in their applications
  • Password memorisation requirements for 'next-gen' security will be reduced by 50%
  • 3D printing will be primarily used for prototyping, manufacturing parts, and packaging
  • Half of the most complex surgeries will be simulated or robot-assisted
  • Key verticals for augmented/virtual reality will include healthcare, military, and manufacturing
