“One of the interesting trends gaining momentum in this market is the integration between a mobile operator's cellular voice service and Wi-Fi calling service. After its full deployment, the VoLTE network helps network operators offer voice over Wi-Fi in areas where licensed spectrum is either limited or unavailable,” says Rakesh Panda, Lead Analyst, ICT, Technavio Research.
The voice over mobile broadband (VoMBB) market is one of the most active markets globally, Technavio said, with many telcos deploying high speed packaged access (HSPA) and LTE networks. VoMBB allows telecom service providers to manage the flow of mobile voice over Internet protocol (VoIP) traffic generated by over the top (OTT) applications such as Skype and YouTube. This relationship between telecom carriers and OTT application service providers opens a new business model for telecom operators to generate revenues from VoMBB services.
Key vendors in the global VoLTE market include AT&T, KT, LG Uplus, SK Telecom, and T-Mobile in the US. Intense competition prevails in this market, and will grow as a number of small players are also entering the marketplace, Technavio said.
