1-Net is on track to launch a new data centre, 1-Net North, in 2016, executives disclosed. 1-Net North will be Southeast Asia’s first Tier III data centre to be certified for Tier Certification of Design Documents and Tier Certification of Constructed Facility by Uptime Institute. The five-storey purpose-built and mission-critical facilities are specifically designed to meet the stringent safety and data security guidelines of the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS). It will include advanced security features, 24x7 secured access control, perimeter fencing and bomb blast-proof concrete wall. All mission critical systems within the facilities are configured to facilitate concurrent repair, maintenance and even replacement without disruption to essential business operations.
In June 2015 BT, a communications services and solutions provider serving customers in more than 170 countries, announced that it will offer data centre services to global customers from 1-Net North. 1-Net customers will have the opportunity to leverage BT’s City Fibre Network, which provides wider network coverage across different data centres regionally.
Wong Ka Vin, MD, 1-Net Singapore, noted that the company was the first to say no to cross-connect charges, which are monthly charges for connections made by a company to servers which are not in the same row of the data centre. While there is a one-time fee to create the high-speed cross-connect, 1-Net does not charge anything further, Wong said.
"We have driven this for more than two years," he said. "I am glad to know that other players in the industry are thinking of dropping charges."
1-Net is also trialling connections to a data centre in Iskandar, Malaysia with similar high-speed connectivity with the ultimate aim of serving the ASEAN region, and is "almost ready" with similar services in Hong Kong, via a Hong Kong data centre partner with links to other data centres, Wong said.
"(A user could) connect Singapore to Hong Kong and (wouldn't) even know if he's connecting to a another data centre in another country," Wong explained. "It is like an extended LAN. It doesn't even change IP addresses."
In October, 1-Net announced that its public cloud service, Alchemy, officially joined Canonical to be the Southeast Asia’s first Ubuntu Certified Public Cloud Service Provider.

Interconnectivity builds on 1-Net’s Data Center Corridor vision, where 1-Net customers can drive better business performance through an interconnected data center network. Customers can transfer large amounts of data between different data centres, not only in Singapore but also in the region. 1-Net North is also on track to be interconnected with 25 other data centres across Singapore as part of the Data Center Corridor, which works toward a better integrated ASEAN digital economy and fosters cooperative business amongst countries.
