The Singapore Computer Society (SCS) has announced its new Executive Council for 2016/17. The new leadership is poised to continue to advance talent development and industry collaborations in the infocomm and digital media industry in Singapore.

“Technology is evolving faster than upskilling can happen. Amidst the push by the Singapore Government to build the world’s first Smart Nation, the infocomm industry is facing manpower crunch as emergent technologies including data analysis and cyber security gain prominence,” said Howie Lau, SCS President and Chief Marketing Officer of StarHub.

“As the largest body for Singapore’s infocomm and digital media professionals, SCS has a role to play to help bridge the talent gaps in the industry. We have been creating platforms for our members to stay relevant in a fast-changing economy, as well as working within a tripartite framework to redeploy displaced professionals.”

Under Lau's leadership, SCS membership has passed the 31,000 mark, a further increase of 7% after a year of high growth in 2014. Into his second term, Lau is set to lead his new Council to mark more milestones for the society.

Among the initiatives rolled out by SCS in 2015 was the elevation of its cloud special interest group (SIG) to a technology chapter to provide greater support for cloud-based industries and innovations. SCS also launched the augmented reality/virtual reality (AR/VR) SIG to promote and build a strategic network of professionals and companies in AR/VR business and applications. In addition, SCS restructured and rebranded its SIGs in healthcare IT, supply chain management and open source to better align with industry needs.

Engaging youths and equipping them for the infocomm workforce has been a mandate of SCS. In 2015, the technopreneurship SIG was launched to promote and nurture a culture of innovation and entrepreneurship endeavours among young infocomm professionals. Over the years, SCS has set up 19 student chapters through its collaborations with institutes of higher learning, and will soon be adding one more chapter under its wing.

“Singapore needs to attract new infocomm cohorts to the industry, and current infocomm professionals need to constantly upgrade their skill sets to stay relevant. At SCS, we are doing our bit to keep the infocomm industry strong and vibrant through our certifications, chapters, SIGs and collaborations with industry players. Looking ahead, we will continue to add value and facilitate the development of ICT talent in Singapore, and to serve as a growth catalyst for the industry,” said Lau.

Beyond the shores of Singapore, SCS established cross-border collaborations as it took its certification programmes overseas. It inked an agreement with the Myanmar Computer Professional Association (MCPA) to implement Certification in Project Management (CITPM), for instance. SCS will continue to fortify the standing of its professional certifications locally and in the region by strengthening ties with existing partners.
