Ascendas-Singbridge Her Startup competition completes Guangzhou round

The Ascendas-Singbridge Her Startup 2016 competition kicked off its Guangzhou round at the Sino-Singapore Guangzhou Knowledge City (GKC) on 4 June, 2016.

As title sponsor of the 2016 Her Startup competition, Asian sustainable urban solutions provider Ascendas-Singbridge is a key supporter of advancing the roles that women play in the innovation landscape through nurturing female-focused startups from ideation, to incubation, acceleration, and ultimately, growth. The second Ascendas-Singbridge Her Startup aims to provide an international platform for women entrepreneurs to showcase their ideas and innovations, as well as to encourage the development of products or services that will impact women positively. At least one member of each participating team must be a woman, or the product or services of the participating team must serve and impact women positively.

The competition is organised by TechBase, SoGal, Lean In China and Krspace and conducted concurrently in China, US, Singapore and Vietnam. In China, the competition takes place in five cities, Beijing, Guangzhou, Chengdu, Hangzhou, and Shenzhen. In the US, the competition will comprise three rounds that cover New York, Los Angeles, and San Francisco.

Regional rounds are held from 27 May to 24 June, and a total 15 finalist teams from the four countries will have the opportunity to travel to the US to participate in the global finals in Silicon Valley. The finalists will participate in a bootcamp to gain firsthand experience of the entrepreneurial environment there and have a chance to present their ideas to venture capitalists in the US, as well as receive a US$5,000 scholarship to attend Draper University’s one-year MBA programme. In last year's Her Startup, 40% of its global finalists attracted over US$5 million in investments through the competition.

The Guangzhou round was held at Ascendas OneHub GKC within the Sino-Singapore GKC. Fifteen shortlisted teams showcased their projects in return for suggestions on improving their ideas. Mrs Nina Yang, Chief Operating Officer of Singbridge, a member of Ascendas-Singbridge Group, said: "As Asia’s leading provider of sustainable urban and business space solutions, Ascendas-Singbridge looks to foster a strong entrepreneurial spirit within the communities that it operates in. We are very supportive of companies involved in technological innovations, and hope that this competition can contribute to the economic transformation and development of the region.

"We are glad that as title sponsors, we are able to further support the competition through our flagship projects, the Sino-Guangzhou Knowledge City and Singapore-Sichuan High-tech Innovation Park. It is indeed our pleasure to help these innovators realise their dreams, and allow their ideas to take flight."

The Sino-Singapore GKC spans 123 sq km, and is located at the core area of the Pearl River Delta region, along Guangzhou's science and technology corridor. When fully completed, it will be a sustainable city that is positioned as an ideal environment for both talent- and knowledge-based industries. Ascendas OneHub GKC is situated at the south of the Sino-Singapore GKC, within its startup area. It has a total construction area of 600,000 sq m, and is a mixed-use development comprising high quality business space, lifestyle amenities and residential facilities. It caters to the development needs of local and multinational companies involved in the industries of technology, software development, and research and development. The Ascendas OneHub GKC plays host to tenants such as the Singapore Centre, Nicolabs Biotech, Sino-Singapore International Joint Research Institute, Centre of Excellence for Software Transfer, Dentalthon Medtech, and Sang Choy International.
