HP commercial printers reinvented to increase productivity, security

HP is focused on making commercial products that make life better for businesses, with the broadest portfolio for ink, laser, and page press printers in the industry. "We reinvented small so you can print big and think big," said Print Category Director, Singapore for HP Park Sang Hoon.

PageWide is one made-in-Singapore breakthrough technology that is helping HP defy expectations, Park said. With PageWide a stationary printhead spanning the width of the page prints on moving paper, instead of a moving printhead stationary paper as is more traditional. Speeds go down as the printer can then print as fast as it can move the paper, at up to 75 pages per minute (ppm). As there are fewer moving parts, maintenance is reduced. There is no fuser to consume energy, so carbon footprints are reduced as well.

HP has also focused on securing its printers, which can become the source of critical security breaches. HP printers are some of the most secure in the world – with proven PC security technologies migrated into the printers, says Lionel Chng, MD, HP Inc. Singapore. "There are so many ways printers can be hacked..what we want to do is introduce the highest level of security," Chng explained.

"We are bringing PC technology into the printer," explained Park. "Printers also have CPUs, memories, and firmware. We are securing them to the BIOS level."

Measures include rebooting once an intrusion is detected, and a 'golden' copy of the BIOS, which cannot be tampered with. Printouts are now engineered to come out face-down for added privacy.

On top the hardware, HP is also announcing the HP JetAdvantage Private Print software for added security. This enables printers to release printouts only after they receive proof that the user is genuine, through a contactless card, for example. HP is further allowing printing to be carried out after authentication through a free cloud service, so that the printouts can be collected in person at any one of supported printers.
