IDC infographic tells all about smartphone ODMs

IDC has published an infographic about the original design manufacturers (ODMs) for smartphones. ODMs are contracted to design a product for a client and do not claim credit for the design, which will carry the client's branding.

Key takeaways include:

Branded phone vendors like Apple and Xiaomi use companies like Foxconn in the background for the purposes of product assembly and - in some cases - design work too. The branded vendors are known as original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), while the assemblers are known as ODMs.

Over 70% of smartphones come from China but this includes semi knockdown (SKD) units - units that are partially assembled - which are assembled locally in India, Brazil, and elsewhere.

Huawei uses multiple assembly partners like Taiwanese ODMs, Chinese ODMs, electronic manufacturing services (EMSes) and also assembles in-house. Apple partners with Taiwanese ODMs while OPPO, vivo and Samsung assemble in-house.

Foxconn is the largest global assembler (excluding in-house) while Huaqin is the largest Chinese assembler
