Alibaba to work more closely with Intel

Alibaba Group announced today that the company is committed to closer collaboration with Intel in areas such as artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, the Internet of Things (IoT) and smart hardware and products.

Daniel Zhang, CEO of Alibaba Group, met Intel CEO Brian Krzanich in Hangzhou, China during the Tmall 11.11 Global Innovation and Smart Living Summit on November 4.

“With everything in today’s world becoming smart and connected, we have a great opportunity to innovate and transform our everyday experiences," said Krzanich. "Intel looks forward to working with Alibaba to drive continued innovation for the world and push the boundaries on key areas such as artificial intelligence and IoT."

As one of the first global partners of Alibaba Cloud, Intel has released the first customised CPU for Alibaba Cloud earlier this year to satisfy its ever increasing performance demands. Intel has worked with Alibaba on many other initiatives.

At Alibaba’s YunQi Computing Conference held in October this year, the two companies, together with Hewlett-Packard Inc (HP), launched the first YunOS Book. Earlier this year, Alibaba and Intel established a joint innovation centre specialising in research and development of technology in semiconductor chips, cloud computing and the IoT.

Zhang said, “Through our strategic collaboration with Intel over the years, we have made significant progress in cloud computing and operating systems. Cultivating a deeper relationship with Intel will help both companies stay at the forefront of the AI and IoT sector, and provide better services to partners on our platform.”

Alibaba believes that AI is the driving force behind building out sound infrastructure for commerce and is a pioneer in this field. Earlier this year, Alibaba Cloud and the Hangzhou Municipal Government jointly developed the Smart City Brain programme to tackle traffic congestion.

The algorithms Alibaba Group member and logistics specialist Cainiao applies to plan the best delivery routes, the big data Ant Financial uses to evaluate a loan applicant’s credit and personalised recommendations to consumers on Taobao are other examples of how Alibaba applies AI to create a better experience for the over 400 million users on its platforms.

Most recently, Alibaba has launched YunOS for Robot, reaching a significant milestone when the world’s first humanoid robot, Pepper, will for the first time be run on Alibaba’s YunOS operating system.
