Fuji Xerox shares digital transformation focus for 2017

Fuji Xerox continues to bring new solutions to market to bring businesses up to speed with mobile and cloud support.

At a media gathering to celebrate Chinese New Year in Singapore Bert Wong, CEO/MD, Asia Pacific Regional Office, Fuji Xerox, noted that the company had reinforced its product lineup in 2016 with a number of significant products, including the Xerox iGen 5 Press colour digital on-demand publishing system which has an optional fifth colour to the usual cyan, magenta, yellow and black inks; Next Generation Managed Print Services (MPS) for optimising print environments and managing documents across mobile and cloud environments; and SkyDesk Media Trek, a cloud-based service conceived to enhance the tourist experience.

"Mobility, cloud, security, everything is online," said Wong. "We continue to futureproof ourselves."

Desmond Ng, GM, Fuji Xerox Global Services, said that CIOs are often unsure of how to begin integrating paper and digital flows together. While they understand that digitalisation can help them save costs and become more efficient as a business, printing is still a must for the older generations, whereas gen Y and gen Z prefer electronic versions.

"There is a lot of confusion in the market about how and when can they start," he shared.

The company has solutions that can integrate paper and digital content together, but has to work with customers closely as each customer's requirements are unique. "The customer has to collaborate with us," Ng said. "A lot of information is with the customer...If we don't walk with them everything will go haywire."

Fuji Xerox has a framework that helps businesses automate and simplify their document management practices by digitising processes. At the initial assessment stage, Fuji Xerox works with the client to determine how print assets, print usage and workflow processes can be optimised. One example is routing a print job to the nearest printer, instead of one farther away. The company also asks why people print, and what happens to the printout thereafter. If it ultimately ends up being thrown away, digitisation may be a better option for that data, Ng noted. "The effort and investment that you put in will be very focused."

Change management is crucial. "If people and culture don't change nothing will change," he said. Solutions like the Fuji Xerox Print Awareness Tool, which is part of the Next Generation MPS, provides real-time feedback about print usage and behaviour, can drive the motivation to change, Ng said.

Another Next Generation MPS offering, Xerox Digital Alternatives make e-documents much easier to use, and supports mobile devices. "Everyone wants different things. We can provide that," Ng said.

Adeline Goh, Marketing Manager at Fuji Xerox, provided an overview of the Fuji Xerox Smart Work Gateway (SWG) at the event. SWG was introduced in Singapore around mid-November 2016, and comprises both Fuji Xerox and third party products and services that work to increase business productivity.

"Fuji Xerox is focused on cloud and mobility," Goh said, explaining that the SWG helps to make offices smarter, greener and more efficient with a suite of products and services that are cloud-based and focused on enhancing information-sharing.

Cloud On Demand Print, for example, sends a print job to the cloud, allowing users to print the job later at any connected printer with a print reference number or by logging in. The mobile app allows documents to be printed on an iPhone from cloud storage services such as Google Drive, iCloud or Dropbox.

Cloud Service Hub allows the management of documents stored in various cloud services through a single sign-on. It offers federated search for text in files stored across different cloud services, for example.

Grace Li, Product Marketing Associate Manager, Fuji Xerox, demonstrated how Skydesk Media Trek works. Launched January 10 in Singapore, Skydesk Media Trek is a cloud-based service that turns a mobile phone* into an audio guide. It uses GPS data to provide audio information about a location.

Content is already available for the Singapore Botanic Gardens, and Serapong Golf Course on Sentosa. The cloud-based authoring tool does not require investment in special equipment and allows users to upload custom audio content for designated spots. Typed text is automatically converted to a synthesised voice in Japanese or English.

“The smartphone penetration rate is very high in Singapore and it made sense to leverage this connected device to help our customers enhance their businesses,” said Wong at the time of the launch. “The SkyDesk Media Trek enables the operators and partners in the local tourism industry to produce customised content for fast growing inbound businesses without investing in additional manpower resources. Fuji Xerox helps our clients succeed in communications through always-available, multichannel platforms including mobile and interactive devices. SkyDesk Media Trek is one way for us to contribute to the development of the local tourism industry.”

Travel agencies have shown interest in rolling out Skydesk Media Trek to inbound customers. NTA Travel Singapore is the first travel agency in Singapore to adopt SkyDesk Media Trek, for example. Shigeru Nakashima, MD, NTA said, “Ever since tour establishment, NTA has been committed to producing quality travel, responding to the needs of travellers and anticipating the demands of the future Fuji Xerox’s SkyDesk Media Trek helps us provide the very best service to our customers.”
