The YouGov Brandindex rankings for 2016 are out for Australia. Alphabet's Google is in top place, followed by YouTube - also owned by Alphabet, with PayPal, Netflix and Facebook also making the list.

Other results include:

+The most recognisable consumer electronics and electrical brands in Australia are Apple, Dyson and Samsung in that order.

+Top Internet brands include Google, YouTube and Facebook, followed by Gumtree and Skype.

+Apple had a clean sweep of the top three places for mobile device brands with the terms Apple, Apple iPhone and then Apple iPad. Apple's iTunes made it to third place for the telecoms/pay TV category, with Netflix and Foxtel in the No. 1 and No. 2 places respectively.

+For travel bookings trivago, TripAdvisor, Flight Centre were the top three.

Brands were rated using BrandIndex’s Buzz score* which asks respondents, “If you've heard anything about the brand in the last two weeks, through advertising, news or word of mouth, was it positive or negative?”

The Buzz Rankings chart shows the brands with the highest average Buzz scores* between January and December 2016. The Buzz Improvers chart ranks the brands with the highest increase in Buzz comparing scores in years 2015 and 2016. Both scores are representative of the general population.

As Brandindex has been tracking brands in Australia since the second half of 2015, these rankings are for 2016 only. Over 260 brands are currently tracked.

*All Buzz scores listed have been rounded to a single decimal place; additional precision was used internally to assign ranks.
