Making Dell EMC PowerEdge servers the bedrock of the modern data centre

PowerEdge servers are the bedrock of the modern data centre. Today they are built to deliver along three pillars that lead to better business outcomes: scalability, automation and security.

Get your foundations right, and success will follow. In the case of the data centre, it is all about the infrastructure, says Mak Chin Wah, GM Compute and Networking, South Asia, Dell EMC. Speaking on the sidelines of the Dell EMC Forum 2017 in Singapore Mak said: "If you build the infrastructure right, with a solid foundation, you can have long-term ROI."

Dell EMC's new 14th generation (14G) of PowerEdge servers are positioned as the bedrock of the data centre, whether customers are using private clouds, public clouds, or traditional apps, Mak said. Designed with customer feedback taken into consideration, the servers address three concerns: security, scalability as data centre infrastructure moves to becoming software-defined, and intelligent automation.

Mak highlighted several features as fulfilling these concerns:

- Non-volatile memory or NVM Express (NVME) technology ensures that workload data is retained even if there is a server outage. This is particularly crucial with platforms like the SAP HANA in-memory database

- 'Dialback' technology will automatically update Dell EMC support if a server goes down so that it can be replaced "before you even know it"

- A mobile 'quick sync' function that allows the IT department to view details of a particular server through a mobile app just by being physically near it

- Silicon-based BIOS protection, ensuring that only authorised firmware goes into the BIOS.

"We want to make sure that end customers are protected," Mak explained.
