Delivered, sold and supported by VMware as an on-demand service, and running on elastic, bare-metal AWS infrastructure, VMware Cloud on AWS is powered by VMware Cloud Foundation, the unified SDDC that integrates vSphere, VMware vSAN and VMware NSX virtualisation technologies. VMware Cloud on AWS is ideal for customers looking to migrate applications to the public cloud, develop entirely new applications, extend the capacity of their data centres for existing applications, or quickly provision development and test environments. It will also support containerised workloads and DevOps services such as Pivotal Cloud Foundry, and others.
Customers across industries are accelerating adoption of AWS Cloud and VMware infrastructure, and many of them want the ability to seamlessly integrate their on-premises data centre environments with AWS using their existing tools and skillsets within a common operating environment based on familiar VMware software. VMware Cloud on AWS delivers on this promise with a seamlessly integrated hybrid cloud that extends on-premises vSphere environments to a VMware SDDC running on AWS elastic, bare-metal infrastructure.
"VMware and AWS are empowering enterprise IT and operations teams to add value to their businesses through the combination of VMware enterprise capabilities and the breadth and depth of capabilities and scale of the AWS Cloud, providing them a platform for any application," said Pat Gelsinger, CEO, VMware. "VMware Cloud on AWS gives customers a seamlessly integrated hybrid cloud that delivers the same architecture, capabilities, and operational experience across both their vSphere-based on-premises environment and AWS."
"With the availability of VMware Cloud on AWS, for the first time customers can operate a consistent and seamless hybrid IT environment that combines the VMware software they love with the unmatched functionality, security, and operational expertise of the AWS Cloud," said Andy Jassy, CEO, AWS. "The majority of the world's enterprises have virtualised their data centres with VMware, and now these customers can easily move applications between their on-premises environments and AWS without having to purchase any new hardware, rewrite their applications, or modify their operations."

VMware and Dell EMC separately announced a new partnership for VMware Cloud on AWS which will bring Dell EMC data protection to VMware Cloud on AWS.
The extended partnership with Dell EMC will offer customers of VMware Cloud on AWS integrated data protection capabilities with Dell EMC's Data Domain and Data Protection Suite for Applications solutions, providing backup and recovery solutions for workloads running in VMware Cloud on AWS. VMware Cloud on AWS customers will also have the option to easily add Dell EMC data protection through a few simple clicks when ordering new on-demand services.
"The introduction of VMware Cloud on AWS further solidifies VMware's position as a driving force behind the movement to the software-defined data centre and the hybrid cloud. Dell EMC is committed to making IT infrastructure seamless, and enabling our customers to modernise their data protection in VMware environments is a critical milestone on the journey to data centre transformation. Being the first data protection provider to offer backup and recovery for VMware Cloud on AWS underscores our commitment to innovative solutions and further advances our deep integration with VMware," said David Goulden, President, Dell EMC.
"As a verified industry leader in Data Protection, Dell EMC was a strong choice for our first data protection solution supporting VMware Cloud on AWS," said Rajiv Ramaswami, Chief Operating Officer, Products and Cloud Services, VMware. "The native integration across the VMware portfolio offers transparency and ease of use for our customers, especially those moving toward the software-defined data centre. This is an exciting first step in partner support for VMware Cloud for AWS."
This partnership further enhances data protection for VMware by leveraging Dell EMC's portfolio-wide native integration with VMware, particularly vSphere, so organisations can manage data protection functions through familiar VMware interfaces providing seamless, automated protection for data stored in VMware Cloud on AWS.
Dell EMC data protection will offer the same enterprise-grade protection for VMware Cloud on AWS as it does for on-premises and hybrid cloud - meaning that all data is protected equally, no matter where it resides.
"Our entire portfolio is architected for tight integration with VMware, so being the first vendor to protect VMware Cloud on AWS is an easy extension of our existing partnership," said Beth Phalen, President, Data Protection, Dell EMC. "Data protection needs and challenges don't go away even as customers move to a software-defined data centre, and the need for familiarity and simplicity is incredibly important as companies work to do more with less in a software-defined world. This new stage of our partnership with VMware is designed to give customers peace of mind for their data in VMware Cloud on AWS."
