SoftBank goes live with Gemalto’s Remote Subscription Management Platform

In April 2017, SoftBank selected Gemalto’s On-Demand Subscription (ODC) platform to connect both consumer and industrial Internet of Things (IoT) devices in Japan and beyond. The ODC platform for consumer devices has now gone live, enabling consumers to connect their eSIM-enabled secondary devices to SoftBank’s mobile network without tethering.

Gemalto’s ODC platform is fully compliant with GSMA standards, and can be used in conjunction with any consumer devices featuring eSIM technology. SoftBank users can now enjoy direct Internet connectivity for the latest eSIM-enabled smart watches, fitness wearables, and many other mobile devices that have traditionally relied on a smartphone for connection.

In the future, eSIM will become the default identification module for all cellular IoT devices. Together with an ODC platform, mobile service providers can provision connectivity for these IoT devices and remotely manage their connections.

Gemalto has delivered eSIM subscription management servers to mobile network operators across different regions, including Asia – more than 50 subscription management solutions for both consumer and machine-to-machine (M2M) applications have been successfully deployed so far.

For the consumer space, Gemalto has partnerships with operators, as well as original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) like Samsung, Microsoft, and Lenovo.

Since the inception of eSIM, Gemalto has been committed to bringing an open platform regulated by GSMA for OEMs to the industry. Gemalto is the only fully GSMA SAS-SM* certified supplier providing a proven, robust and secure environment for commercial launches, which involve remote SIM provisioning technology, the company said.

*The GSMA’s Security Accreditation Scheme (SAS) enables MNOs to assess the security of their UICC and eSIM suppliers, and of their eSIM subscription management (SM) service providers.
