ESET launches enhanced consumer portfolio

ESET, the global cybersecurity provider, has introduced a refreshed range of products for consumers designed to protect against cyberthreats.

The launch was held in a cinema on the first day Justice League was shown. Walia said ESET will continue to improve on the user-friendliness and performance of its products.

The advanced suite of products, which include ESET NOD32 Antivirus, ESET Internet Security and ESET Smart Security Premium, have a low impact on system resources and offer an ideal combination of effectiveness, speed and usability. "As a company it is our responsibility to do products with enhanced functionality and bring out more features which are more easily understood by the consumer," said Parvinder Walia, Sales and Marketing Director at ESET, Asia Pacific.

Beng Hai Sim, Technical Sales Manager – APAC, ESET, shared that new releases for the consumer portfolio are now identified by the year - this is the 2018 edition - instead of a version number. He noted that the Internet Security product had been introduced last year, and that the 2018 edition of Internet Security will include an anti-theft feature that had previously only been available in the Smart Security Premium product.

The flagship products think outside the box in providing protection. A new layer of security found in all the products activates before Windows starts running to identify threats planted in the unified extensible firmware interface (UEFI) or BIOS.

“We recognise the importance of prevention – identifying and removing threats before they strike,” said Walia. “This is why our full suite of products for 2018 include unified extensible firmware interface scanners, or UEFI scanners, to detect and remove threats that potentially launch before an operating system even starts.”

Malware in the UEFI is not destroyed even if the operating system is reinstalled, Sim explained. "The hackers' UEFI rootkit can be used to survive operating system reinstalls," Sim said. "You can change the hard disk but (the rootkit) is still there. It runs at the firmware level. No antivirus out there is able to scan without the Windows operating system being loaded. We are the first endpoint security vendor to come up with this new feature."

Also new in the portfolio are a re-invented licence manager, with all important data available with one click at my.eset.com and a new System Cleaner feature which resets system settings to the default in five categories. The licence manager is built for ease of use, requiring an email address and a password to add licences after a product is activated on a device. When the product is deactivated on the device, the licence can be redeployed elsewhere.

Internet Security and Smart Security Premium as well as the bundled version, ESET Multi-Device Security, feature an improved Connected Home Monitor with a friendlier user interface. The feature scans the network and the router for vulnerabilities, and also checks if the firmware is updated on all connected devices.

Walia also shared that ESET is also committed to enterprise security and will launch new enterprise products. "We are offering new solutions like threat intelligence," he said. "Our core business is Internet security but we have started acquiring companies. DESlock is now fully integrated into the ESET portfolio."

DESlock is known for data encryption. Its encryption engine figures in the ESET Secure Data feature offered as part of ESET Smart Security Premium, as well as in ESET Endpoint Encryption, an enterprise solution.

Walia also spoke about the ESET Technology Alliance, through which ESET offers a range of IT security solutions to complement its own portfolio. This allows ESET to offer solutions for backup and recovery from Xopero, data loss prevention from Safetica, Flexera's patch management and insights on network management from GREYCORTEX MENDEL.
