Nanyang Polytechnic is the first Fortinet Network Security Academy in Singapore

Fortinet, the global high-performance cybersecurity solutions provider, has announced that Nanyang Polytechnic (NYP) is its first partner in Singapore to jointly offer cybersecurity training under the Fortinet Network Security Academy (FNSA) programme.

FNSA was created to address the international shortage of cybersecurity experts and to build a workforce skilled in all aspects of Fortinet’s Security Fabric from endpoints to the cloud, who will be recognised in the industry among an elite group of security professionals. The Academy brings the training and certification opportunities previously only offered to Fortinet customers and partners to educational institutions, non-profit organisations and veterans' programmes.

Fortinet sponsors the training content and examinations for each Academy site, along with supporting instructor preparation. Academy sites offering the training and certification courses provide the lab environment (virtual or hardware) and instructors to deliver the programme content.

Training for faculty is free of charge for these organisations, arming the professors with the skills needed to teach the program to students who will learn how to protect global organisations from cyber threats. The programme is also available internationally at selected organisations in Asia Pacific, as well as elsewhere in the world.

“Singapore has been moving towards a full digital economy in a big way and many industries, from banking to healthcare, are now adopting e-services. While it is a boon for convenience and efficiency, a growing digital footprint also presents a larger potential attack surface that could be exploited by cybercriminals,” said Thiantara Kruathorn, Fortinet’s Country Manager for Singapore.

“The cyber threat is real, and Singapore’s Cyber Security Agency (CSA) has reported over 1 million cyber attacks per day from the web annually in 2016 and 2015. It is therefore critical that we play a part in training cybersecurity professionals to protect local networks and essential services in Singapore and globally. Current estimates show up to 1 million cybersecurity job openings globally with demand expected to rise to 6 million by 2019.”

The Academy will provide Fortinet’s industry-recognised Network Security Expert (NSE) training and certification opportunities to participants. Students are prepared for career success in network security, obtaining both theoretical lectures and hands-on laboratory practice during the course.

“Nanyang Polytechnic has seen growing interest in its IT courses,” said Dennis Ang, Director, NYP School of IT. “It is almost a given for any business today to have cybersecurity measures in place to safeguard data and systems round the clock. NYP graduates of the FNSA course will have a clear edge in the cybersecurity job market as this Fortinet certification is highly regarded worldwide.”

The NYP-FNSA programme between Fortinet and NYP is open to full time students of pre-employment Education and Training (PET) courses as well as part time continuing Education and Training (CET) courses in IT and cybersecurity, and complements NYP’s courses in network security. Students will learn how to design and configure secure enterprise networks with next generation firewalls, intrusion prevention systems (IPS), email and anti-malware security.
