Universal Robots (UR), the collaborative robotics company, is strengthening its partner network in Malaysia. The four new partners, industrial technology integrators, will provide small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) and enterprises with robot automation solutions.
Bizit Systems in Johor, Multitrade Asiapac and Servo Dynamics in Penang, and TEM Engineering in the Klang Valley, join a growing network of UR channel partners in Southeast Asia to support increasing demand for collaborative robots (cobots) in the region. In Malaysia, cobots are deployed in industries such as electronics, automotive, semiconductor, furniture and consumer products.
Shermine Gotfredsen, GM, Southeast Asia and Oceania at UR said: “Malaysia is an important market for Universal Robots due to rising demand for automation and strong government support for robotics. Our new partners have the technology expertise to assess, recommend and implement appropriate UR cobot solutions, notably for companies new to automation. They will also provide hands-on training to managers, technicians and workers. Cobots’ endless benefits and wide range of applications offer huge advantages for industries in Malaysia, enhancing productivity, quality and workers’ wellbeing.
“Firms that have gone the automation route have increased production by as much as 300% while reducing defects by 90% and lifting profits by 20%. Average automation levels within Malaysian manufacturing firms are still low—with 80% automating less than 50% of their processes. As businesses face rising costs for raw materials and a weak currency, investing in innovative automation technology is necessary to remain competitive. Those that have not done so must make the transition quickly.”
Unlike bulky traditional industrial robots, UR says that cobots are lightweight and mobile, more affordable, and can be modified for different applications.
Universal Robots separately shared that PT JVC Electronics Indonesia (JEIN) has enhanced productivity, output quality and workers’ wellbeing with Universal Robots’ cobots, while saving over US$80,000.
JEIN, a a manufacturer of car audio-visual and navigation devices from the JVCKENWOOD Group, was heavily dependent on manual processes deployed seven units of Universal Robots’ UR3 cobots to increase productivity and achieve consistent output quality.
Gotfredsen said, “We are working with JEIN to accelerate the transition to smarter production and sustainable growth. JEIN’s automation success is reflective of how cobot integration continues to help businesses across Southeast Asia enhance their manufacturing processes and remain competitive. Cobot adoption is high in the electronics industry, enabling greater productivity, improving safety and relieving employees of repetitive and strenuous tasks. They are also applied in other sectors including automotive, pharma and chemistry, and food and agriculture.”
The small, lightweight and compact nature of the UR3 cobots complemented the company’s production facility, which had space limitations. The cobots were installed without needing to make drastic changes to the workspace layout and supported the use of various end effectors – grippers, soldering irons, screwdrivers. This allowed the team to customise the cobots to undertake three different tasks at the facility – screwing, soldering, and pick-and-place.
Safety was an important contributing factor for JEIN when purchasing the cobots. UR cobots, designed with a patented safety system, allow employees to work in close proximity without the need for safety fencing (subject to risk assessment). Moreover, the cobots relieved workers from handling high risk tasks such as soldering and separating cut PCB parts, which emit hazardous fumes and dust particles.
Agustinus P. Simanullang, GM, Engineering Division at JEIN, said, “Through the adoption of cobots, we were able to improve production efficiency and our output quality is now more consistent. With the move towards automation, our manpower can be redeployed to other higher-value processes, and we have been able to reduce operational costs by more than US$80,000 yearly.”
The successful adoption of Universal Robots at JEIN has convinced the company and group management of the ease of automation. The JVCKENWOOD Group is now looking to adopt UR cobots at its operations in Japan, China, Malaysia and Thailand.
UR has a global cobot market share of 58% (BIS Research) and has sold more cobots than all its competitors combined. The company has been widening its distribution channels in multiple markets; currently it has 300 distributors in more than 50 countries worldwide. More than 23,000 UR cobots are deployed globally.
