CES Asia 2018 shows directions for future tech

CES Asia 2018one of the fastest growing tradeshows in Asia, was the platform for a number of announcements and conclusions about the tech industry. 

Gary Shapiro, President and CEO, Consumer Technology Association (CTA) said in his opening keynote, “We’re proud to bring the entire tech ecosystem together this week in Shanghai to focus on the future of tech. The innovations on the showfloor create disruption, but also provide solutions. Self-driving vehicles can stop fatalities; artificial intelligence (AI) is making us safer and healthier and drones are helping in disaster relief.

CES Asia focuses on what unites us rather than on what divides us.” 

Following Shapiro’s remarks, Hisense Chairman Zhou Houjian and GM Yu Zhitao explored the future of display technology, explaining how Hisense is creating a full-field view search interactive function, opening a new era of television image interaction. Zhou also touted its new AI technology developed specifically for the World Cup, which will provide an individualised, interactive experience for sports fans across the world.

Huawei President, Handset Product Line, Kevin Ho, took the keynote stage in the afternoon to introduce its vision for a new image era in mobile technology, including its cutting-edge lens technology, 5G internet capability and the advanced GPU Turbo processor. Ho also launched Huawei’s Next Image Awards competition.

The first day ended with BYTON President & Co-Founder Dr Daniel Kirchert and Henrik Wenders, VP, Marketing, using the keynote stage to share the company’s vision of the future of self-driving cars. The session also marked the global reveal of BYTON’s K-Byte concept car, which is expected transform the auto industry in the age of smart mobility. This is BYTON's second concept car, and will support self-driving and in-vehicle entertainment. 

Miffy Chen, head of Alibaba A.I. Labs, kicked off day two of CES Asia with the news that TMall Genie AI Union is to accompany TMall Genie. Tmall Genie is a smart speaker developed by Alibaba using the intelligent personal assistant service AliGenie. She also announced the world’s first commercial Bluetooth mesh chip at a US$1 price point.

During the day two conference, panelist Evan Tahler, Chief Product Officer, Voom Flights, added his take on the role of airborne urban transport as the next logical step in solving the urban congestion issues, stating that by 2030 up to 5 billion people will be living in urban centres.

The AR/VR Forecast panel on day two also highlighted that 2018 and 2019 will be critical years for augmented reality and virtual reality (AR/VR), especially in the development of all-in-one products. The conclusion is that the Chinese market is at the forefront of AR/VR, particularly in industrial applications.

Some of the announcements shared during CES Asia included: 

- Cadillac presented the Super Cruise, the first hands-free driving system for the highway. The Super Cruise feature is available on 2018 CT6 models produced on September 6 2017, and later.

- Honda announced the Honda Xcelerator project, which aims to cooperate with innovative enterprises worldwide. As part of US-based Honda Innovations, Honda Xcelerator serves as a catalyst to discover and experiment with new technologies and business concepts. Honda Xcelerator provides startups with funding for prototyping, access to a collaborative workspace, and support from Honda mentors. Focus areas for Honda Xcelerator include AI, connected vehicles, energy innovation, human machine interfaces, industrial innovation, personal mobility, and robotics.

- Kia announced its Boundless for all vision, which aims to provide customers with broader solutions and reinforce its concept of Mobility-ACE. Shared at CES in the US in January, Kia’s ACE strategy is based around three core elements, presenting Kia’s vision for future personal transportation:

Autonomous – Kia plans to commercialise Level 4 autonomous driving technology, with smart city autonomous vehicle testing due to commence in 2021
Connected – By 2025, Kia will adopt connected car technologies across every vehicle segment, and aim to make every single model a connected car by 2030
Eco/Electric – Kia will introduce 16 new advanced powertrain vehicles by 2025, including a range of new hybrids, plug-in hybrids and electric vehicles, as well as an all-new fuel-cell electric vehicle in 2020

- Leapmotor Technology announced a strategic partnership with Amap and Teld. Amap will provide support to Leapmotor in hardware, software, and big data, while Teld and Leapmotor Technology will jointly build 80 million charging stations in China

- The SENSEPLAY FPV Car Series took the No. 1 slot in Last Gadget Standing. This competition, held every year at CES, crowd-sources winning technology.

CES Asia 2018 ran from June 13 to 15 at the Shanghai New International Exhibition Centre (SNIEC) and Kerry Hotel in Shanghai, China. The 2018 CES Asia showfloor was 2.5 times larger than the inaugural 2015 show, featuring products from more than 500 global companies, including more than 100 startups, across more than 50,000 gross sq m.
