Qualcomm, New H3C announce 802.11ax access point

At Mobile World Congress Shanghai, Qualcomm Technologies, a subsidiary of Qualcomm, and Tsinghua Unigroup subsidiary New H3C announced the availability of the H3C WA6628, an 802.11ax enterprise grade access point (AP) that can improve wireless network transmission rates by at least three times more than the mainstream 11ac Wave 2 AP.

Based on Qualcomm Technologies’ IPQ8078 802.11ax chipset, this new solution is designed to offer one of the fastest throughput rates for an enterprise AP, by supporting 12 stream channels that serve data to up to 1,000 client devices simultaneously. The WA6628 is targeted to begin shipping to customers in September 2018.

Qualcomm Technologies’ IPQ8078 chipset supports up to 10 Gigabits per second (Gbps) for wide-area networks and up to 6 Gbps peak physical (PHY) layer rates on Wi-Fi. The WA6628 makes full use of the IPQ8078 chipset's capabilities, with a 10G Ethernet port and built-in Bluetooth.

The IPQ807x family of chipsets, which includes the industry’s first commercially available 14 nanometer 11ax Wi-Fi system-on-a-chip (SoC), is designed to improve the connectivity experience with the following 802.11ax features:

- 8x8 MU-MIMO doubles the number of devices which can be concurrently served versus the previous generation of Wi-Fi, 802.11ac

- Orthogonal frequency-division multiple access (OFDMA) technology enables the network to handle simultaneous data streams more efficiently

- Scheduling features control traffic on crowded Wi-Fi networks

8x8 MU-MIMO is a key feature that will also accentuate the 8x8 sounding capabilities in products based on Qualcomm Technologies’ new WCN3998 11ax solution for client devices. The solution also supports the Wi-Fi Alliance’s third generation security suite, Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA3), their latest and most secure protocol provides robust protection of user passwords and stronger privacy in both public and private Wi-Fi networks.

“Qualcomm Technologies has a history of technology leadership and is a driving force in the industry’s transition to 11ax, enabling our customers to innovate and deliver excellent Wi-Fi experiences to their end customers,” said Irvind Ghai, VP, product management, Qualcomm Technologies.

“As enterprise networks continue to evolve and become denser, they require next-generation access points that can deliver the richer experiences and strong network capacity enterprises require,” said Bi Shouwen, VP, New H3C. “802.11ax technology is poised to deliver the performance enhancements and efficiency improvements enterprises need, and we are excited to join forces with Qualcomm Technologies to bring to market one of the industry’s strongest 11ax enterprise access point.”
