The App Store: App Annie shares highlights of the first 10 years

App Annie, the mobile app data and insights company, has unveiled The Data Behind 10 Years of iOS App Store report, which includes trends and highlights from 10 years of the iOS economy in Singapore.

Some of the trends in Singapore mirror global trends, with media and entertainment apps downloaded the most globally as well. Netflix, Spotify and Tinder are among the top apps in all-time consumer spend rankings globally. Classic apps such as Candy Crush, Fruit Ninja, Temple Run and Angry Birds remain the top downloaded gaming apps globally and in Singapore.

Notable trends for the App Store in Singapore over the past decade include:

·        Newer entrants enjoy rapid monetisation. Globally, App Annie found that iOS App Store revenue growth nearly doubled between 2015 and 2017. Similarly, five out of top 10 apps which have enjoyed the highest consumer spend in all 10 years of the App Store in Singapore were released in 2012 or later, and the majority are media and entertainment-related:

- Video streaming service Netflix ranked No. 1, despite only being released in Singapore in 2016

- Homegrown app BIGO LIVE (No. 2) was released in 2016

- Karaoke app Sing! By Smule (No. 4) and Tinder (No. 6) were released in 2012

- Viu (No. 8), another video streaming service, was released in 2015

Spotify was at No. 3, while The Straits Times was at No. 5. LinkedIn is the only social media app to penetrate top 10 rankings for consumer spend, coming in at No. 9.

Live streaming services are popular in countries such as Korea and China, where viewers provide income for the content creator through “gifts”.

Other highlights:

The Asia Pacific region accounts for 59% of App Store consumer spend, with China increasingly contributing a larger share.

·         China dominated the 2017 charts. China accounted for 39.9 billion downloads (all-time), second only after the US. In third place was Japan, with just 9.5 billion downloads. In terms of all-time consumer spend, China is again at No. 2 with US$27.7 billion spent, and Japan in 3rd place with US$25.2 billion spent

·         Nearly half of top apps were owned by China-headquartered companies. IQIYI remains one of the largest streaming services by consumer spend worldwide, driven almost entirely by its performance in China

Industry leaders retain a firm hold amidst new competition

·         Facebook, Instagram, Whatsapp, YouTube and Skype remain in the list of top 10 apps downloaded globally despite new entrants such as WeChat, LINE and KakaoTalk

·         Netflix maintained its No. 1 spot for iOS app store consumer spend, driven in part by its continued international expansion

Video streaming apps are only set to get larger amidst intensifying demand

·         More than half of the top apps for consumer spend around the world consist of video streaming apps

·         Tik Tok, a popular short-form video platform and social network from China, is No. 1 by global downloads in 2018

From July 2010 to December 2017, over 170 billion apps have been downloaded, and more than US$130 billion has been spent. There are over 2 million apps available as of May 2018, and nearly 10 thousand apps have generated more than US$1 million in consumer spend each since July 2010. In 2017 alone, 564 apps generated over US$10 million in consumer spend each, and 2,293 more accounted for between US$1 million and US$10 million in purchases. App Annie forecasts that by 2022, consumer spend in the iOS App Store will reach US$75.7 billion, up 80% from 2017.

Despite a larger Android installed base, the App Store generates nearly twice as much consumer spend as Google Play globally. Indonesian iPhone users have 113 apps installed, and use 42 apps per month, whereas South Korean users have 112 apps installed and use 40 apps a month. Japan is in third place in Asia with 109 apps installed, and 37 apps used a month. China ranks fourth in Asia with 103 apps installed and 41 used a month.
