HOOQ adds four more free-to-air channels to freemium offering

HOOQ, Asia’s first and largest video-on-demand service, has extended its leadership in Indonesia through the partnerships inked with tvOne, ANTV, BeritaSatu and DW.

The agreements pave the way for HOOQ to introduce four more free-to-air (FTA) linear channels on its platform’s freemium layer. This brings the FTA channels on the freemium section to 13 on its Live TV feature. This is the largest selection of FTA channels on any major platform in Indonesia, HOOQ said.

The expansion underscores HOOQ’s intent to make Indonesia, Southeast Asia’s largest market, and its launchpad for new features and content business models, as well as highlighting HOOQ’s commitment to strengthen both its existing freemium and premium content offerings.

Peter Bithos, CEO of HOOQ said, “Live TV was a purposeful pursuit with the belief
that offering consumer the convenience of ‘Free TV in their pocket’ together with the best premium content for as little as US$0.25 a day is a uniquely powerful combination. Only HOOQ has put an end-to-end video platform together.

"To achieve this, we continue to craft breakthrough and innovative industry partnerships with the free-to-air broadcasters which neither cannibalise nor destroy their advertising revenues. Indonesia for us is just the start! We continue to believe the industry needs an alternative video platform versus today’s dominant social media platforms, which have a stranglehold on free video distribution and do not provide a viable means for premium content monetisation.”

The Live TV feature introduced at the end of April came on the back of consumer insights highlighting that FTA channels continue to dominate total viewing within Southeast Asian
families, particularly for Indonesians. HOOQ saw the untapped opportunity to build an end-to-end, complete platform for premium content to meet customers’ needs to be entertained where, when and how they want to. Live TV in Indonesia on HOOQ’s freemium layer has already generated over 1.5 million monthly active users (MAUs) within the first 60 days of its launch.

Jennifer Batty, Chief Content Officer of HOOQ commented, “Now Indonesians can find the best free entertainment and the best premium entertainment all in one place. The amazing value proposition we have built makes the best of local and the best of Hollywood entertainment accessible to Indonesians from all walks of life and tremendously increases the reach of our content partners.

"Whether a customer wants to watch a great show on their favourite Indonesian channel for free or chooses the best premium content even for just a day, HOOQ now offers that entire experience in one platform.”

TvOne is a news-centric channel with comprehensive local and international news coverage. tvOne’s content slate also includes law and crime infotainment programmes such as Indonesia Lawyers Club and Menyingkap Tabir.

ANTV provides local reality, comedy and drama content with hit titles such as Karma (a reality show), Pesbukers (a comedy), and Jodoh Wasiat Bapak (a series).

DW provides coverage on events and developments of Indonesia and Germany.

BeritaSatu is known for programmes with a focus on the local and regional political and economical
landscape. Its programmes include Hot Economy, People & Inspiration, and Travel Notes.

This announcement comes on the back of HOOQ’s announcement that it will also introduce over 20 pay TV channels (known in the industry as a ‘skinny bundle’) into its already premium (paid-for) packages.
