IDC recently said has overtaken Apple to become the world’s second-largest smartphone vendor for the first time in seven years. According to IDC, Huawei delivered shipments of 54.2 million units for the quarter, with market share of 15.8% and Apple with 12.1%*. Canalys has also reported that the strong performance was driven by the successful sale of the brand’s latest flagship, the P20 series**.
Cheng Jiangfei, MD, Huawei Singapore Consumer Business Group, said: “We have come a long way as a consumer brand and we are deeply humbled to be recognised as the world’s second largest smartphone vendor that reinforces our foundations as a premium global brand. At Huawei, we are committed to offer premium and reliable technologies that resonate with our customers. Our latest technological advancements are supported with a continuous investment in research and development. Last but not least, we would not have been able to achieve this milestone without the support from our dedicated customers and partners that we are extremely grateful for.”
In Singapore, Huawei is on track towards strong business growth with its current offerings that include the P series that focuses on cutting-edge photography and style, and the Mate series which introduces the latest software and hardware capabilities in the industry. The overwhelming response for its recent HUAWEI nova 3i launch last Saturday at Waterway Point also reflects an increasing public interest in the mid-range segment.
“Singapore is an important market for Huawei and we will be centring our efforts on meeting customer needs and creating value with meaningful technologies,” said Cheng.
More than a thousand HUAWEI nova 3i phones were sold within an hour on first day of sale in Singapore. The Iris Purple model was sold out within the hour.
Among the first to get the new HUAWEI nova 3i in Singapore was Joseph Lim, who joined the queue together with his father at the stroke of midnight. The pair bought four phones for the entire family. Notably, the Lim family will be using a HUAWEI smartphone for the first time. “The features and price of the phone are very attractive and is beyond what other regular phones provide, especially for its price. With all the different features like storage space and a bigger screen, it's totally worth the wait and value,” he said.
John Yong, who was second in line, became a Huawei convert after his first purchase on the spot. He said at the time of the purchase, “My friends have been giving very good reviews about Huawei smartphones, and I wanted to buy one for myself since the new nova 3i is being launched today. I am really impressed with the colour and screen size and I’m happy that I can buy this phone without breaking my wallet.”
Michelle Sim and her sister Stella Sim were also new to Huawei. Both commented that they were drawn to the specifications, design and attractive price tag of the phone.
The HUAWEI nova 3i is priced at S$398 and features the world’s first four artificial intelligence (AI) cameras that can optimise photos by scene; a 6.3" FullView display; and the all-new Kirin 710 chipset. The chipset is the latest generation in a family of AI processors designed by Huawei for the nova series.
Cheng said at the time of the announcement, “The response that we have received from the public has been phenomenal and reaffirms our commitment to bring meaningful innovation at an affordable pricepoint to mass consumers. We are grateful for all the support from our customers, telecommunication operators and media partners who have made the nova 3i a success!”
Huawei will continue to innovate in core technologies including AI, augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) to enable a more connected and convenient lifestyle for its customers, the company said.
