Huawei Consumer Business Group has launched StorySign, a mobile app that uses artificial intelligence (AI) to translate books into sign language for deaf children. The app was developed by Huawei in partnership with the European Union of the Deaf and the British Deaf Association.
"We believe AI can help to push what is humanly possible," says Walter Ji, President of Consumer Business, Huawei Western Europe, in an accompanying video.
There are approximately 32 million deaf children globally and many struggle to learn to read, often due to a lack of resources that bridge sign language and reading.

StorySign can be downloaded for free from Google Play Store and the Huawei AppGallery. The app is currently available in the UK and Europe in 10 different sign languages - sign language is different for different countries - and launches with one classic children’s book from Penguin Random House in each language, with more on the way.
Availability in Asia will be released next year.
