At CES 2019 Intel made announcements spanning PCs, new devices and growth segments including artificial intelligence (AI), 5G and autonomous driving.
“Anyone can claim leadership in an isolated use case, but at Intel our aim is broader. The next era of computing demands innovation at an entirely different level – one that encompasses the entire ecosystem and spans every facet of computing, connectivity and more. We won’t settle for anything less,” said Gregory Bryant, Intel Senior VP, Client Computing Group.
Aimed at advancing the PC experience to help power every person’s greatest contribution, Intel unveiled the next wave of PC innovation including:
- New 10nm platforms for mobile PCs
Codenamed Project Ice Lake, the new mobile PC platform is expected to deliver a new level of technology integration on a client platform. Compatible with the upcoming 14nm Cooper Lake, Ice Lake processors targeting servers are expected to deliver performance improvements, new hardware-enhanced security features and more, with most shipments targeted for 2020. Intel’s OEM partners are expected to have initial devices with Ice Lake on shelves by holiday 2019 (year-end).
- A preview of a hybrid 10nm CPU architecture with Foveros 3D packaging.
Codenamed Lakefield, the architecture will provide original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) with more flexibility for thin and light form factor design. Foveros extends die stacking beyond traditional passive interposers and stacked memory to high-performance logic, such as the CPU, graphics and AI processors for the first time. This hybrid CPU architecture enables combining different pieces of intellectual property that might have previously been discrete into a single product with a smaller motherboard footprint.
Project Lakefield has five cores, combining a high-performance Sunny Cove core with four Intel Atom processor-based cores. Lakefield also features long battery life, performance and connectivity.
- Project Athena, an innovation programme to deliver a new class of advanced laptops
Combining world-class performance, battery life and connectivity in sleek, beautiful designs, the first Project Athena laptops are expected to be available in the second half of this year across both Windows and Chrome operating systems.
- Expansion of the 9th Gen Intel Core desktop processor family
Aimed at meeting a broad range of consumer needs from casual users to professionals and gamers to serious content creators, the new additions to the 9th Gen Intel Core desktop processor family are expected to be available starting this month with more rolling out through the second quarter of this year.
Additionally, as part of its commitment to powering the data-centric world across the cloud, network and edge, Intel also announced:
- the Intel Nervana Neural Network Processor for Inference (NNP-I), dedicated to accelerating inference for companies with high workload demands
This new class of chip is dedicated to accelerating inference for companies with high workload demands and is expected to go into production this year. Facebook is one of Intel’s development partners on the NNP-I. Additionally, Intel is expected to have a neural network processor for training, codenamed Spring Crest, available later this year.
- Expansion of 5G with 10nm systems on chip (SoCs)
Intel disclosed it is expanding its decade-long investment in network infrastructure with a new 10nm-based network codenamed Snow Ridge. This network SoC has been developed specifically for 5G wireless access and edge computing. The SoC is intended to bring Intel architecture into wireless access base stations and allow more computing functions to be distributed out at the edge of the network. Snow Ridge is expected to be available in the second half of this year.
- Shipments of next-generation Intel Xeon Scalable processors
Intel announced it has started revenue shipments of its next-generation Intel Xeon Scalable processors, codenamed Cascade Lake. Cascade Lake introduces support for Intel Optane DC persistent memory and Intel DL Boost, which is designed to accelerate AI deep learning inference. Cascade Lake is expected to be broadly available in the first half of this year.
Intel also teamed up with Alibaba to develop the first-ever AI-powered 3D athlete tracking technology.
Intel and Alibaba announced on the eve of CES that the companies are teaming to develop athlete tracking technology powered by AI that is aimed to be deployed at the Olympic Games 2020 and beyond. The technology uses existing and upcoming Intel hardware and Alibaba cloud computing technology to power a deep learning application that extracts 3D forms of athletes in training or competition from multiple standard video cameras, without the use of special sensors or suits.
“The product, innovation and partnership announcements we’re making today highlight that Intel’s strategy is working. We are making excellent progress in pursuing a massive US$300 billion data-driven market opportunity spanning the most important workloads – such as AI, 5G and autonomous driving. And on a scale unmatched by others,” said Navin Shenoy, Executive VP, Data Center Group, Intel.
