FiberStar exploring fixed network, data centre solutions in collaboration with Huawei

Themed Leading New ICT, Accelerating Service Innovation with ISP, the 4th Huawei ISP Summit focused on how the Internet service provider (ISP) industry can undergo transformation in the Asia Pacific region, implementing artificial intelligence (AI) solutions and new technologies more effectively.

At the summit, industry players discussed topics such as Singapore’s leading role in the region as a digital economy player, aspects of the country’s Smart Nation strategy, and the need for continuous infrastructure investment. Indonesia, the Philippines, and Malaysia were highlighted for their potential to become digital economies, facilitated by more backbone network and data centres.

FiberStar, a nationwide infrastructure service provider in Indonesia owned by the CBN Group, signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Huawei during the summit. The company has a submarine network connecting Sumatra, Java and Bali in Indonesia to Singapore, and is present in 86 cities.

Under the terms of the MoU the two parties will explore potential collaboration in fixed networks and data centres (DCs). Both parties will collaborate to accelerate Internet infrastructure transformation in Indonesia. Huawei will contribute as a strong technology partner in network and DC solution design and execution.

Daniel Zhou, President, South Pacific, Huawei Enterprise Business Group said digital transformation is driving Huawei's growing global sales revenues, and shared that the ISP industry had contributed 63% of revenues to the overall business for the Southern Pacific region.

He said, “The current state and pace of development of Internet infrastructure in Asia Pacific remains uneven, with great variations from country to country. Huawei’s aim is to capitalise on our global expertise and experience to work with the countries that could benefit from support to reshape their Internet infrastructure and networks, such as Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, India and Thailand. At the same time, we are committed to tailoring solutions for more advanced digital development needs of countries such as Singapore.

“Huawei is currently the most ideal partner in driving ISP transformation within the Asia Pacific region. As a reflection of ISPs’ confidence in our abilities, Huawei's ISP business revenue in the Southern Pacific Region achieved a 112% growth in 2018, and we expect this to grow steadily in 2019. As the application of clouds in the Asia-Pacific Internet industry accelerates, Huawei will continue to provide leading and innovative solutions for ICT infrastructure such as clouds, DCs, and networks, helping customers build an open, flexible, agile, and secure infrastructure platform to accelerate business innovation and remain competitive in the digital age.”

In a keynote at the summit Zhou said that 2019 is the year Huawei will put 5G theory into practice, and touched on various trends facing ISPs including migrating traditional data centres to cloud data centres; adopting green data centre infrastructure, and exploring cloud as well as 5G connectivity.

"We want to be the enabler of industry digital digitisation and the preferred partner," he said.

Zhou said in a separate briefing that last year was the first time ISPs contributed over 60% in the Southern Pacific region, which had been expected as ISPs provide infrastructure for digital transformation for all other businesses.

Huawei's customers include Indian ICT vendor Sify, which uses custom software-defined network (SDN) solutions from the company.
