VMware unveils new wave of advanced technology

VMware recently reinforced its vision of a software architecture that enables any app, on any cloud, to any device with the introduction of significant new technology offerings and strategic partnerships at VMworld 2019 Europe.

VMware CEO Pat Gelsinger highlighted the unprecedented growth in applications, massive complexity in delivering and managing them in a keynote, and showed how VMware helps customers harness this ‘chaos’ for business advantage.

“VMware’s vision remains the same - enabling our customers to operate any application, on any device, from any cloud. With cloud as the foundation, we’re transforming the app experience and providing intrinsic security for your data,” said Gelsinger. “We are redefining what’s possible.”

Technology highlights from the keynote include:

VMware vRealize Operations Cloud, a software-as-a-service (SaaS) solution that will offer self-driving operations to automate and simplify operations management with artificial intelligence/machine learning (AI/ML) to move IT’s approach from reactive troubleshooting to predictive innovation. This offering is now in beta.

Also unveiled: Project Magna, a SaaS-based solution which will help customers to achieve a true ‘self-driving data centre,’ starting with VMware vSAN. This offering will use reinforcement learning - collecting data, learning from it, and making decisions that will automatically self-tune customers’ infrastructure to drive greater performance and efficiencies. Customers can now access this new solution through a beta programme.

VMware also announced it has met another important milestone in its continued journey as a responsible tech company—joining the United Nations Global Compact. This is a commitment to adopting sustainable and socially responsible business practices, as well as catalysing action to advance the United Nation’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals by 2030.

Other announcements at the event included:

New security solutions
  • Dell will make Carbon Black Cloud, along with Dell Trusted Devices and Secureworks, the preferred endpoint security solution for Dell commercial customers
  • New VMware NSX distributed intrusion detection and prevention
  • New VMware NSX Federation for consistent, centralised network and security policy configuration and management for large-scale NSX deployments
  • Enhanced VMware SD-WAN branch firewall performance, flexibility and usability features
  • VMware Secure State updates that reduce public cloud risk and improve security posture
  • A new zero-trust security architecture for the digital workspac
VMware Tanzu

Tanzu is a new portfolio of products and services designed to transform the way enterprises build, run and manage software on Kubernetes. VMware unveiled a beta programme for both Project Pacific and VMware Tanzu Mission Control, and outlined the details of a new VMware Cloud Native Master Services Competency for partners.

VMware Tanzu Mission Control offers a single point of control from which customers will manage all their Kubernetes clusters regardless of where they run; while Project Pacific works to transform VMware vSphere into a Kubernetes-native platform.

The VMware Cloud Native Master Services Competency will enable partners to architect a Kubernetes-based platform supported by complementary technologies from the cloud-native ecosystem for continuous delivery of applications.

Project Maestro for telcos

Project Maestro will deliver a unified approach to modelling, onboarding, orchestrating, and managing virtual network functions and services. With this cloud-first orchestration solution, CSPs will be able to build and automate network services across more network function formats, enabling interoperability and optimising their operations across every layer of the network functions virtualisation (NFV) and telco cloud architecture.

The company also introduced VMware Ready for NFV, a certification programme that enables interoperability and operational readiness between third party-developed virtualized network function working domains (VNFs) and the ETSI-compliant VMware vCloud NFV platform. The programme helps enable communications service providers (CSPs) to rapidly onboard and deploy multivendor VNFs with the VMware vCloud NFV platform.

VMware Workspace ONE

New day zero experiences securely provide new hires with access to useful resources such as the company directory, intranet, and benefits information before their start date. In addition, new hires will be able to use Intelligent Hub to complete some onboarding workflows, such as selecting the technology to be delivered to the employee on their first day.

VMware also introduced a new integration of Intelligent Hub with HID Global, an access control solutions provider. The new Intelligent Hub “Passport” feature will enable employees to use the app on their personal or company-owned mobile device to gain entry to buildings.

The new Workspace ONE Intelligence for Consumer Apps empowers organisations to capture and monitor performance data from their consumer-facing mobile apps.

VMware Cloud on AWS

The ability to run containers and Kubernetes on VMware Cloud on AWS is provided with VMware PKS. VMware Enterprise PKS - Pivotal Container Service - is a Kubernetes-based container solution with advanced networking, a private container registry, and lifecycle management.

The new VMware Cloud Director service is a SaaS version of the VMware vCloud Director service-delivery platform. With multi-tenant capabilities, managed service providers can easily share a pool of VMware Cloud on AWS capacity with several tenants, instead of just one.

Project Path will expand the VMware Cloud Provider Platform—VMware vCloud Director and VMware Cloud Provider Hub—in a phased rollout. It will unify management and operations across all VMware cloud endpoints, including partners’ own clouds; VMware software-defined data centres (SDDCs) running in AWS, Azure, Google Cloud, IBM Cloud, or Oracle Cloud; and native public clouds.

VMware SD-WAN

At the event, VMware showcased how VMware SD-WAN by VeloCloud delivers a secure access services edge (SASE) platform. VMware also shared plans to deliver deeper integration between Microsoft Azure and the VMware SD-WAN Cloud Gateways deployed inside Azure.

VMware and Microsoft initiatives were also announced, including:
  • A new combined solution featuring VMware Workspace ONE and Microsoft Endpoint Manager to accelerate Windows 10 modern management
  • Further global expansion of the Azure VMware Solutions hybrid cloud service, with new advanced cloud migration capabilities delivered through VMware HCX
  • Certification and support for Microsoft SQL Server 2019 on VMware vSphere running in customer data centres;
  • An intent to collaborate to deliver the best customer experience for Azure Data Services on VMware cloud infrastructure; and
  • Extension of Azure to branch and edge environments with VMware SD-WAN by VeloCloud.
