HP Malaysia Manufacturing (HPMM) has launched the HP Malaysia Manufacturing Transformation Center in Penang, Malaysia. This 4,639 sq ft facility embodies HP’s vision for the future of advanced manufacturing, and is dedicated to researching and testing advanced Industry 4.0 technologies while also exploring the early stages of Industry 5.0 integration.
Fourth industrial revolution (4IR) technologies include robotics, automation, the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), additive manufacturing, and predictive analytics.
A solar photovoltaic array on rooftops and parking areas reduces greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The installation is expected to generate 2,720 MWh annually, covering approximately 6% of the facility's electricity usage.
HPMM produces and supplies inkjet cartridges to 175 countries worldwide, and is recognised as one of the world’s largest manufacturers of micro electrical mechanical systems (MEMS). Its manufacturing approach aligns with Malaysia's vision for industrial growth.
Alex Tan, MD, HP Inc. Malaysia, said that HP's mission is to create technology that inspires ambitious and meaningful progress. "The transformation centre is transforming the way we design, produce, and optimise our print supplies production. For HP, the facility represents our commitment to being Future Ready, driving innovation, embracing sustainability and preparing our workforce for the challenges of tomorrow," he said.
"For Malaysia, the transformation signifies opportunity. It strengthens the country’s position as a global leader in the micro electrical mechanical system (MEMs) space, and aligns with the government’s industrial transformation roadmap including initiatives such as Industry4WRD and the New Industrial Master Plan 2030 (NIMP 2030).
"The centre will also serve as a training ground to upskill local talent and foster collaboration across government, academia, and industry players, contributing to Malaysia’s industrial and economic progress," said Tan.
HP remains committed to partnering with Malaysia to drive innovation, create opportunities, and contribute to a more sustainable future, Tan added.
"In a rapidly changing world, we remain steadfast in our commitment to accelerating innovation — not only to seize new opportunities but to address the challenges of tomorrow," he said.
"Being Future Ready is central to our business strategy. We are committed to driving innovation and delivering products and services that our customers need to thrive in a rapidly evolving world. Together, we aim to grow, adapt, and succeed."
Part of the strategy focuses on Future Ready Operations, strengthening the organisation to stay ahead in the digital age, while ensuring sustainable and efficient business practices, Tan said.
People are equally important. "At HP, we believe that digital transformation begins with workforce readiness. That’s why at HPMM, we continue to invest heavily in upskilling our employees, preparing them to excel in the modern manufacturing landscape. After all, our people are the driving force behind our success," Tan shared.
Under the HP SPARK Programme, launched in 2024, HP works closely with the Malaysian government and local educational institutions to nurture a highly skilled workforce for the future of advanced manufacturing. The programme focuses on skill development in critical areas such as robotics, automation, data analytics, and sustainable manufacturing practices.
HP is also deeply committed to sustainability and is committed to supporting Malaysia’s Roadmap Towards Zero Single-Use Plastics 2018–2030 and other government policies promoting environmental stewardship. This is aligned with HP’s Global Sustainability Goals, which include achieving carbon neutrality, zero waste operations, and 75% reduction of single-use plastics by 2025.
HP’s presence in Malaysia dates back to 1972, while HPMM was set up in 2016.
