GSMA announces nominations for the 19th annual Global Mobile Awards

The GSMA, which represents the interests of mobile operators worldwide, today announced the nominees for the 19th annual Global Mobile Awards. In total, 160 nominees have been shortlisted from over 680 quality submissions for this year's Global Mobile Awards; the full list of nominees and awards categories can be found here.

Several new categories have been introduced in the 2014 awards and, in total, 38 awards will be presented over eight categories, with six new awards showcasing evolving trends across the mobile ecosystem. Among the new awards, the 'Best Mobile Handset and Devices' category now has two smartphone awards that reflect the rapid growth of the smartphone market and recognise the positive impact of affordable devices. There have also been enhancements in the 'Best Mobile Technology' category, 'Social and Economic Development' category and the 'Apps of the Year' category, amongst others.

A number of nominees come from Asia Pacific and the Middle East, or are nominated for projects in these regions. Nominated for the Best Mobile Health Product or Service award are the Mobile Alliance for Maternal Action (MAMA) and the Telecom Development Company Afghanistan (Roshan). MAMA delivers vital health messages to new and expectant mothers in developing countries via their mobile phones in Bangladesh, South Africa, and India while Roshan facilitates telemedicine. MAMA is also a nominee for the Best Mobile Product, Initiative or Service in Emerging Markets award.

Two Indian firms are being considered for the Best Mobile Education Product or Service award. Applied Mobile Labs is singled out for an app teaching English while Enable Mobile Technologies has been highlighted for the Magic Pencil cloud-based platform for the publication of learning resources and managing student performance. 


Qualcomm has also been named for the same award for WE Learn, a programme involving Singapore’s National Institute of Education, Qualcomm’s Wireless Reach initiative, Nan Chiau Primary School, Microsoft and other partners to prepare Singapore’s students with self-directed and collaborative learning materials using 3G smartphones. Samsung Electronics is the fourth nominee of the five nominees in this category, for the Samsung Chromebook.


Korea's EnGIS Technologies is listed for the Best Mobile Product or Service for Automotive award for its BringGo app, which transmits smartphone navigation information directly to an in-car infotainment unit.  Mahindra Reva Electric Vehicles and Vodafone Business Services are being considered for REVive, machine-to-machine communication technology that allows the emergency reserve charge to be remotely activated for an electric vehicles. 

UAE's Etisalat is being considered twice for the Best NFC/Mobile Money Product or Service award, for the Flous – Connected Commerce Program, and the ‘Mobile Cashier’ – mPOS (Mobile Point of Sales) Service. China Mobile's Mobile Wallet has also caught judges' eyes, as did Telenor Pakistan for Easypaisa, the largest branchless banking service in Pakistan. Easypaisa appears as a nominee for
Best Mobile Product or Service for Women in Emerging Markets as well.


China Mobile is also listed as a nominee under Best Mobile Innovation for ‘Smart Cities’ for its ‘Future City Future Living’ project, as is SK Telecom from Korea, for its 'Smart Guide'.

Nominees for Best Mobile Publishing Product or Service include Hong Kong-based MotherApp for the FamLoop KidsHub Children’s Book Publishing Suite, while Taiwan's Mio is in the running for Best Mobile Enabled Consumer Electronics Device. Sony Mobile Communications is also listed within this category, for its NFC-enabled Android SmartWatch 2 SW2.

The winners will be presented on 25 February, the second day of the GSMA Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain. The ceremony is open to Mobile World Congress attendees from all shortlisted companies, regardless of pass type, as well as all other Mobile World Congress attendees holding Platinum, Gold, Silver or Press/Analyst passes.
