KDDI signs with Gemalto to secure VoLTE services

Gemalto, a digital security provider, will provide Japan's KDDI with its UpTeq multi-tenant LTE SIM to secure KDDI's Voice over LTE (VoLTE) services. This development extends Gemalto's relationship with KDDI: Gemalto's SIMs, platforms and services successfully supported KDDI's near field communications (NFC) rollout.

This move to LTE will allow KDDI to offer both voice and data services on one single network. In future, KDDI will also be able to launch a whole new set of secure and interactive services for its subscribers. KDDI's VoLTE service will enable the company's 40 million subscribers to enjoy improved voice quality, simultaneous voice and data usability, and seamless connectivity using the newer IP-based 4G LTE network. With data speeds for LTE four times faster than 3G networks*, calls will be connected much faster than in a traditional 3G network.

"With KDDI's LTE network covering 99% of the Japanese population**, we have the necessary infrastructure in place to make the VoLTE deployment a success," said Masahiro Kobayashi, Executive Director and General Manager, Product Planning Division at KDDI. "This project is a renewal of our partnership with Gemalto, (with) whom (we) have delivered time and time again on quality execution, reliability and innovation."
Michael Au, President South Asia and Japan at Gemalto, noted that VoLTE has the potential to be a US$16 billion dollar business by 2017, making KDDI's entry into the LTE market very timely. "In addition, Japanese consumers' mobile savviness means they have the latest handsets to make the most of VoLTE. With this deployment, KDDI will be able to develop new revenue streams and prepare their business for the future," he said.
