Flipkart, India's largest online marketplace, has enabled image search on its mobile app to revolutionise the shopping experience using ViSenze technology for visual search and image recognition.
Machine intelligence pioneer ViSenze enables people to search by uploading photos instead of guessing keywords and lists products that are visually similar when browsing through Flipkart's fashion category. The feature allows users to upload photos of fashion items and locate similar products in terms of colour, pattern or style that are listed in the Flipkart merchandise database. Additionally, users browsing Flipkart's catalogue can find visually similar products with a single tap. This eliminates keyword-guessing, simplifying the search process.
Oliver Tan, CEO and Co-Founder of ViSenze, said that image search will come in handy for searches such as for ethnic clothing, where it can be assumed that keywords can vary widely. "The partnership with Flipkart not only attests to the strength of our products, but also reinforces our mission to enable retailers to capitalise on smart innovations in visual technology to uplift conversions, while empowering shoppers with real-time ability to search without the hassle of keyword guessing," said Tan.
Visenze originates from a R&D spin-off from the National University of Singapore, and develops visual search algorithms, combining deep learning with computer vision technology to solve search and recognition problems in the visual web space. Visenze image search clients include Indian jewellery e-marketplace Caratlane, fashion e-tailer Zalora (a Rocket Internet company), luxury e-tailer Reebonz, e-tailer Rakuten Taiwan, as well as patent search engine PatSnap.
