MOOCs disrupting education

Technavio's global massively open online courses (MOOCs) market report predicts that massively online courses will generate US$8 billion between 2015 and 2019 through platform licensing, course certifications, examinations, tutoring, and other personalised student services, arriving at a CAGR of 47% by 2019.

“Of late, the education sector is experiencing massive changes in education delivery methods, thanks to the growing popularity of open education and MOOCs. These new pedagogy techniques promote interactive learning sessions through online video lectures. This helps students in gaining better understanding of a topic, resulting in their active participation in classes. Also, various MOOC vendors have collaborated with premier educational institutes and offer world-class education to students across the globe, free of cost,” says Jhansi Mary, Lead Analyst, Education, Technavio Research.

Organisations are beginning to implement MOOCs to offer employees online training, reduce costs, and increase employee productivity. Also, factors such as continuous innovation in terms of cutting edge delivery methods using smart devices contributes to the growth of this market. Thanks to these encouraging developments, the global MOOCs market is predicted to experience substantial growth in emerging economies over the next four years.

The key vendors in the global MOOCs market include Coursera, edX, Udacity, and Udemy. MOOCs providers such as Coursera are introducing advanced delivery systems that cater to students by making questions appear in a forum where other students can discuss and answer. During the forecast period, the vendors are expected to introduce virtual labs, for instance allowing a student in electronics to build circuits and test their effectiveness online, without actually being in a lab.
