The Internet of Things (IoT) is expected to surpass mobile phones as largest category of connected devices in 2018, the company forecasts. According to Ericsson there will be close to 16 billion IoT-related devices by 2021, out of a total of 28 billion connected devices. APAC will lead up till 2021 with nearly 5 billion IoT-connected devices.
Warren Chaisatien, Director of IoT, Ericsson and Networked Society Evangelist, speaking at the release of the Ericsson Mobility Report* for Q116 at BroadcastAsia2016, said that IoT is opening up massive opportunities for operators and industries. He noted that Industries can benefit from increased automation, resource optimisation and regulatory compliance with IoT, in addition to an enhanced user experience and new offerings. Telecom operators, on the hand, can expect better revenue growth, new services and more customisation, as well as better automation and operational efficiencies. "Industries save money. Operators make money," he said.

Chaisatien says that Ericsson is focusing on utilities, public safety, transportation, security, and smart cities when it comes to IoT. |
The Ericsson Connected Vehicle Cloud enables application developers, government organisations, businesses, and automotive manufacturers to reach drivers and passengers with services and information. It has been live with Volvo cars since 2013, and recently entered China through Geely Auto, he noted. Basic functionalities, entertainment, infotainment, safety and maintenance downloads are sent from the cloud to all Geely car models, with the long-term goal of autonomous driving in sight. There are also connected seaports, connected healthcare, and maritime cloud projects, he shared.
The IoT will receive a boost with data roaming rights. Ericsson is working with the Bridge Alliance, a cluster of 36 mobile operators from the Asia Pacific, Middle East and Africa, to deliver seamless and secure roaming for IoT devices. The Ericsson Device Connection Platform enables cross-border IoT deployments with one service level agreement (SLA), a move which could come in useful for industries like oil and gas, where connected rigs may operate in any number of countries.
