SAP sports analytics turned up a notch to provide German National Football team with insights for Euro Cup

SAP has developed new prototype technologies and enhanced existing tools to provide the German National Football Team (DFB) with unique, data-driven and interactive insights to more effectively prepare for opponents and upcoming matches.

Part of SAP Sports One, the solutions were developed by SAP in collaboration with DFB for use leading up to and during the Euro Cup tournament and include:

 SAP Challenger Insights help the DFB prepare for their European Championship matches by providing data insights surrounding an opponent’s offensive and defensive tendencies, formations, and more, powered by the SAP HANA Cloud Platform. SAP HANA processes high volumes of data in real-time, enabling data to become more meaningful and ultimately, help the team make better decisions about their players.

  • SAP Challenger Insights provide a real-time platform to inform DFB players ahead of or during a match and is a prototype functionality within SAP Sports One.
  • The match analyst can review the opposing team’s tactical characteristics and create an assumed match plan. Accessed through one device (iPads) that DFB players reference in their lockers prior to a match or during halftime, match analysts can deliver the assumed game plan of the opposing team so DFB can familiarise themselves with opponent tendencies and reference past video replays.
  • The DFB trainers can alter the on-field strategy if an opposing team changes their lineup or formations.

 A Penalty Insights Function for SAP Sports One, powered by the SAP HANA Cloud Platform, provides DFB goalkeepers and goalkeeping coaches with insights into the tactical behaviour related to penalty kicks of all teams and players competing in the European Championship in real time.

  • The team can search the top five or more players most likely to take penalty kicks, the area of the goal they usually aim at, specific shot characteristics such as the player’s run, and also watch corresponding video clips.

Additionally, building off the success of the Football World Championships in 2014, SAP made extensive enhancements to previously released technologies that played a significant role in the German National Team’s success resulting in their 4th Championship.

 For the European Championship, Match Insights, which is a standard functionality of the SAP Sports One solution, now features a new dashboard for easy access to past DFB games and matches against upcoming opponents. It also includes an improved user interface and integration to the SAP Team One App to share single sequences among DFB players, and connection with a central media cloud library.

 The SAP Team One App, which also is part of the SAP Sports One solution, was enhanced to allow DFB players to share videos and images, facilitate internal team communications, and participate in individual chat rooms – acommodating discussions between trainers, a 1:1 conversation between a DFB coach and player or deliberations between the entire defensive unit.

“Digitalisation affects our entire economy and society, and is also entering the world of sports. SAP and DFB teamed up to spearhead this digital transformation and to take football to the next level,” said Bernd Leukert, Member of the Executive Board, SAP SE. “With SAP Challenger Insights and the penalty insights function for SAP Sports One, we are putting the power of real-time data and information directly into the hands of coaches and players.”

“Together with SAP, we have created a match plan that puts the power of real-time data and information into our hands and helps us gain a competitive edge,” said Oliver Bierhoff, Manager of the German National Football team and SAP ambassador.

SAP and DFB partnership

In 2013, SAP announced its partnership with the German Football Association (DFB) to improve the efficiency of the organisation. The DFB was searching for innovative ways to gain a competitive edge on the field. Players, coaches and scouts were looking for real-time information and insights to make swift and informed decisions in an easy-to-consume format.

With just 14 weeks until the start of the Football World Championships in 2014, SAP kicked off a co-innovation project with DFB coaches and players to develop custom technology that would enhance preparation and on-field performance. This resulted in SAP developing SAP Match Insights, an app powered by the SAP HANA Cloud Platform.

 SAP Match Insights helped the team analyse matches, producing insights to help players improve their performance. Video data was captured to find and assess key situations in each match and utilised by the coaches and players to better prepare for the next opponent. SAP Match Insights was a game changer for the German National Team as they won the Football World Championship in 2014. The solution later went on to become part of SAP Sports One.

 With speed being a critical focus for the German Team ahead of the World Cup, they were able to analyse stats about average possession time and cut it down from 3.4 seconds (during the 2010 World Cup) to about 1.1 seconds.

Additionally, in preparation for and during the Football World Championships, DFB coaches, scouts, and players used an SAP prototype mobile app to communicate more quickly and effectively, consume information more flexibly, and to create a sense of community, which was one of Bierhoff’s most critical tasks.

The app allowed players to provide updates on injuries, coaches to send relevant soccer-specific information and footage, and provide specific notes and much more. The app also later went on to become part of SAP Sports One.

The DFB has also successfully implemented the SAP CRM rapid-deployment solution powered by SAP HANA, SAP ERP, as well as SAP Event Ticketing software – all running in the SAP Cloud. With these solutions, the DFB is able to target marketing campaigns and promotions for fans more effectively, while ensuring profitable operations.

SAP Sports One is the first sports-specific cloud solution powered by the SAP HANA platform. It provides users with a single, unified platform to manage their individual teams and players efficiently, as well as handle analytical insights for performance optimisation. Launched in June 2015, SAP Sports One combines the following applications in one holistic solution: Team Manager, Training Planner, Player Fitness, Match Insights, Team One App and Scouting.
