5G networks will be driven by an increased demand for IoT as well as mobile data requirements, which is expected to exceed 6 exabytes per month by 2021, up from 0.4 exabytes in 2015. As it is, mobile data nearly doubled in 2015 compared to the year before, according to the Ericsson Mobility Report* for Q116.

When it comes to data types, it is video which is the fastest-growing data segment, though all data types are experiencing strong growth. Mobile video traffic accounts for around 55% of the annual growth.

Dr Ewerbring discusses the potential for 5G.

5G promises higher throughput, fewer delays, and thus an improved experience, said Dr Magnus Ewerbring, VP and CTO Asia Pacific, Ericsson. The technology could lower latency by 5x or more, handle 1,000x the mobile data volume, and extend battery life by 10x, he said. "We are trying to understand the bottlenecks and what can be improved with 5G," he said.

The increased speed of 5G would make new applications that were not possible before, such as allowing mining machines to be remotely controlled, making it safer for miners; or 'platooning', where one car is driven and a fleet automatically follows it.

Ericsson is currently working with 22 operators on early trials for commercial 5G, paving the way for its commercial introduction in 2020, Ewerbring said. Besides Singtel in Singapore, Ericsson is working with operators in Japan, Korea, China, and Australia, among others.

Dr Ewerbring noted that while vendors can collaborate with operators, the local regulators have a crucial part to play. "(They) must be out early making sure good spectrum is available to build the 5G networks," he said.

The future for 5G is bright, he concluded. "(There will be) 150 million 5G subscribers by 2021, and that's only the beginning," he said.

*The Ericsson Mobility Report is one of the leading analyses of mobile data traffic available, providing in-depth measurements from live networks spread around the globe. The report uses these measurements and analysis, together with internal forecasts and other relevant studies, to provide insights into current traffic and market trends in the networked society. The report defines a connected device as a physical object that has an IP stack enabling two-way communication over a network interface.
