Johnston brings over 15 years’ experience in solution selling and enterprise level engagement to Commvault. He will be responsible for directing Commvault’s sales and marketing operations in ASEAN and Korea, with a focus on growing strategic partnerships with both customers and channel partners.
“Matthew has a proven track record driving growth and leading diverse teams across Asia Pacific and Japan, in some of the industry’s top enterprise software organisations. We are fortunate to have found someone with his calibre to lead the Commvault business in two key markets, ASEAN and Korea. We are confident Matthew will help further extend Commvault’s reach and leadership in data protection and information management in the region,” said Owen Taraniuk, head of Commvault in Asia Pacific and Japan. Taraniuk was himself appointed as Vice President of Asia Pacific and Japan. for Commvault in January.
“The technology landscape has changed dramatically. Today, we are handling and managing so much more data in many more formats. My priority at Commvault will be to work with our enterprise and SMB customers to help them gain full visibility of data and information across their entire organisation in order to turn their data into a powerful strategic asset,” said Johnston.
Prior to Commvault, Johnston held a number of software leadership roles at Dell, including Managing Director for Greater China and General Manager of Solution Sales in Asia Pacific and Japan. Johnston cut his teeth as a sales engineer before moving to Quest Software and on to Dell after Quest was acquired by the latter in 2012.
The news follows Commvault's announcement in mid-June that it is positioned by Gartner in the Leaders quadrant of the recently released Magic Quadrant Data Center Backup and Recovery Software. Gartner positioned Commvault highest on execution and furthest on completeness of vision, marking Commvault’s sixth consecutive year as a leader in Gartner’s market evaluation for backup and recovery.
According to Gartner, “This 2016 Magic Quadrant for Data Center Backup and Recovery Software is a refocus and update to the Magic Quadrant for Enterprise Backup Software and Integrated Appliances that was last published in June 2015. The renamed Magic Quadrant and updated market criteria are in response to Gartner client requests to focus more on backup and recovery software for the upper midsize to large enterprises that protect data center workloads managed by data center personnel*.”
The new report also states that “data protection approaches of the past may no longer suffice in meeting current — much less future — recovery requirements. As such, many companies are willing to adopt new technologies and products from new vendors, and they have shown an increased willingness to augment or even completely switch backup and recovery providers to better meet their increasing service-level needs, overall cost requirements and ease of management needs*.”
“For Commvault, it has always been all about the data, and the new Magic Quadrant validates our strategy to help companies manage and protect their data, and to flexibly adopt new technologies, in particular the cloud,” said N. Robert Hammer, Chairman, President and CEO, Commvault. “Commvault is a clear leader in the data center backup and recovery software – so say our customers and our partners. We have earned this recognition by heavily investing in innovation, supporting the widest variety of hardware, hypervisors, cloud and other platforms in the industry and by offering flexibility in software packaging and pricing.”
Customer requirements are changing. According to Gartner:
· By 2020, 30% of organisations will leverage backup for more than just operational recovery (e.g. disaster recovery, test/development, DevOps, etc.), up from less than 10% at the beginning of 2016*.
· By 2018, the number of enterprises using the cloud as a backup destination will double, up from 11% at the beginning of 2016*.
Specific examples of Commvault’s leadership include:
· Delivering workload and data portability solutions that enable enterprises to extend the traditional data centre to the cloud
· Leveraging its single code base to provide customers with solutions that can scale from small virtual machine (VM) backup projects and other solution-specific bundles to full enterprise-wide data backup and recovery.
· Providing the broadest level of support in the industry for physical, virtual and cloud technologies, expanding customer choice, eliminating vendor lock-in and empowering customers to move their workloads to any infrastructure they want.
· Offering flexible pricing models that keep costs down.
· Adopting a modern disaster recovery approach that fits customer needs in prioritising application recovery, ensuring a manageable plan for IT resources.
According to Gartner, Magic Quadrant Leaders have “the highest combined measures of ability to execute and completeness of vision. They have the most comprehensive and scalable product portfolios and a proven track record of established market presence and financial performance. For vision, they are perceived in the industry as thought leaders, and have well-articulated plans for enhancing recovery capabilities, improving ease of deployment and administration, and increasing their scalability and product breadth.
A cornerstone for Leaders is the ability to articulate how new requirements will be addressed as part of their vision for recovery management. As a group, Leaders can be expected to be considered part of most new purchase proposals and have high success rates in winning new business. This does not mean, however, that a large market share alone is a primary indicator of a Leader. Leaders are strategic vendors, well-positioned for the future, having established success in meeting the needs of upper midsize and large data centres.
