Double-digit CAGR for OSS-BSS software driven by revenue management technology

  • The OSS segment accounts for a majority of the market’s revenue
  • Key vendors – Amdocs, Ericsson, Huawei, NetCracker, Oracle, and Redknee

Technavio expects the global operations support systems (OSS) and business support systems (BSS) software market to grow at a CAGR of around 19% between 2016 and 2020, driven primarily by the increased adoption of revenue management systems (RMS).

Billing processes in RMS include features such as pricing management, credit limit management, invoicing, payments, and rating and charging. Convergent billing systems provide new businesses with a unified definition framework for pricing and rating. They can allow customers to predict the real-time consumption and expenditure across a service or a payment mode. Telecom operators across the globe are rapidly adopting RMS, which supports retail, wholesale, and enterprise business segments. Growing demand to consolidate the individual systems will augment the implementation of RMS, and will aid in the growth of OSS-BSS software market over the next four years.

The rapid deployment of long-term evolution (LTE) networks will augment growth in this market, Technavio added. Multiple strategies such as differentiated bandwidth pricing, subsidised pricing of connected wireless modules including modems and gateways, easily deployable cross-vertical industry solutions, and bundled cloud-based platform solutions are driving the adoption of 4G for connected devices communications.

By 2020, the OSS software segment will account for market revenue of almost US$37 billion to continue its dominance over the global OSS-BSS software market. The need for customer-centric communication service providers (CSPs) and applications that improve customer experience are factors driving growth in this segment of the market. OSS software helps in the fast uptake of core voice services and enables a provision solution for all subscribers. The software is capable of automatically gathering the user-end data, such as the handset or configuration settings, which is required when customers subscribe to new data services.

BSS software is the faster-growing segment in the OSS-BSS software market and is expected to grow at a CAGR of more than 21% by 2020. Much of this segment’s growth comes from its ability to deliver customised mix of services to targeted segments. As BSS software is directly linked to customers and their requirements, CSPs are increasingly using it for convergent billing to increase the market revenue. The software enables telecom operators to develop multiple pricing and bundling of services, which will boost this segment’s growth in the coming years.

Rakesh Panda, Lead Analyst, ICT, Technavio Research, said: "The adoption of customised OSS-BSS software facilitates telecom service providers to deliver bundled services to enhance the user experience."

Key vendors in the global OSS-BSS software market include Amdocs, Ericsson, Huawei, NetCracker, Oracle, and Redknee. Other prominent vendors in the OSS-BSS software market include Aria Systems, Accenture, Analytica Resources, Cerillion, Comarch, Comptel, CSG International, Elitecore Technologies, Global Convergence Solutions, Hewlett-Packard, Hitachi Data Systems, Intec Systems, SAP, Sigma Systems, Subex, Wipro, and Xalted Information Systems. Competition in this market will intensify during the forecast period with the entry of telecom network infrastructure providers, Technavio said.
